Re: Case Selling Advice

Cases are one area where upgradeitis can really get you, because they are hard to sell. If you have the original box (or at least an acceptable box), I've had pretty good luck selling on ebay, even with high shipping costs. But you'll probably have to settle for a lower sell price. You can specify "...

Re: SFF Case for Sandy Bridge CPU?

I own the m350 case and am using a core i3 2100t inside it with the stock heatsink since it is low profile. I also have an intel x-25m 80gb 2.5" ssd that I have placed right above the heatsink. I can tell you now that this is probably not something you would want to do; rather, place the ssd in the...

Re: Sandy Bridge IGP power consumption with dual screen

I just did a quick check. With dual screens, my system was holding steady at 33 Watts AC, mostly idle. Using a Kill-A-Watt. I pulled the HDMI cable from the back of the PC. I watched the Kill-A-Watt for about a minute. It stayed on 31 Watts, occasionally dipping down to 30 briefly. I don't have any ...

Last time I checked, that was true for AMD integrated video.

Re: Sandy Bridge IGP power consumption with dual screen

Does anyone have any experience of how much power H67 uses when driving two displays, or thoughts on how this might be with the new chipset? I just built a system with the following specs: CPU - i5-2600K MB - Intel DH67GD RAM - 2 x 4 GB 1333 HD - Intel 320 series 300 GB SSD I drive dual digital mon...

Re: Looking for Case Recommendations

I've been looking at the In Win IW-PE689 . It's a top-mount PSU, but you seem to have relaxed that requirement. I don't know if you consider its appearance "refined and subdued"; I'd call it "plain and utilitarian" (which is my personal preference). I don't have any personal experience with it, but ...

Re: Looking for Case Recommendations

Bottom-mounted PSU : The cats love hitting the power on the top-mounted PSU of my server. It's annoying. If you relax this requirement, you have a lot more options. Unfortunately, it seems cases with bottom-mounted PSUs are still relatively rare. Have you considered other solutions to your cat prob...

Other manufacturers offer nvidia 210-based cards with passive heatsinks. I have one made by MSI in my media PC (also running Linux). My previous setup used the ECS N8800GT, which came with a factory-installed Accelero S1... If you wanted even lower temps, you could remove the Accelero S1 from your o...

Do you drives have the codes WD20EARS-00S8B1 (4 platter) WD20EARS-00J2GB0 (4 platter) or is it WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (3 platter) or do you have another revision? Anyone happen to know if there is a reliable (and easy) way to determine if a WD20EARS has three platters or four? E.g. via firmware revision or serial number or something along those lines? Mike, the mini-ITX vendor said, "Spec’ing ECC RAM on your MB really limits your customer base, so not too many companies do it, especially in small form factors." How does adding additional features limit your customer base? You can offer ECC support, but the end-user (or even OEM) can still use non...

I like the build guide. Even if the component choices don't necessarily meet one's requirements (e.g. ECC), it's still an informative article. If you're building a car, you can still learn from someone building a tractor. :) Some random thoughts... I'm in the "you should use ECC" camp. My understand...

It is Bios related. From my experience there are manufacturer patterns you can (usually) trust: SuperMicro & Intel always gets this right, you don't even have to ask. The x16 slot(s) will support anything that follows the PCIx specs. Zotac and BioStar seem to consistently get this right too. You mi...

Such a list would indeed be a nice thing to have. It would be a lot of work to establish something like that. You'd probably also have to tag the information to BIOS revision as well, since, technically, a motherboard vendor could change the functionality of the PCIe slot with a BIOS update. I would...

Mid-size 1156 cooler / SI-128 bolt-thru kit?

I'm looking for a "mid-size" 1156 cooler for an Intel Xeon x3440. By "mid-size", I mean less than 5.5 inches / 140mm tall. This requirement unfortunately seems to eliminate most of the 120mm tower coolers. I'm also looking for reasonably low-price, say $35 (US) or less. The CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Pl...
