Hmm, quiet PC, and 19 hard drives. Conflict of interest anyone? haha This is NZXT's second go at a quiet case, the Hush was the first. Shame that unlike Antec, NZXT keep the crazy bright Blue LEDs on their quiet cases, kind of ruins the effect really. The pair of 80mm fans above the PSU is an intere...

One of my housemates purchased a terabyte greenpower, and it turned out to be a WD10EAVS, which I'd never heard of. Any info on how these compare? It was pretty good, certainly very low vibration and airborne hiss, but it did have a single tonal pitch to it probably around the 19-20dB mark, which ca...

I'm actually quite impressed with the 140mm Streamliners. At maximum speed in my friend's PC they must be producing 27dB at the most, and the vast majority of that is turbulence noise from the radiator he uses them to cool, there is no click/hiss/grid whatsoever from them, I suspect because they use...

I had no trouble getting an RMA from WD, and the Greenpower drives seem quiet. The results from most Seagate drives noise-wise are less than impressive, and during seek, my older 250GB Seagate is actually significantly louder than a 36.7GB Raptor, if you can believe that.

http://i37.tinypic.com/2nio5jn.jpg Is this of genuine concern? Most people I Ask who don't own the drive say it's a SMART error, and therefore I should RMA the drive. However, there seems to be widespread discussion about a possible misdiagnosis due to unrecognised information via certain chipsets....

Several queries regarding HD4000 series

Hi there, eventually I will need to upgrade from my solo HD3870, since I run 2560x1600, and the 4800 series cards are unquestionably the ones to buy for the moment. However, I have numerous reservations about using one (or more likely, eventually two), primarily noise. a) I know the stock coolers ru...

I can tell you now - the 900 was a hard case to silence, the 1200 will only be worse. it's too open to hide airborne noise from hard disks and any small fans, plus the stock fans don't go silent at low speed, far from it.

Indeed. I'm thinking "you get what you pay for" - the S1 is half the price of the HR-03. Now I know why that is. Oh well, off to ebay with it as a 'faulty' job. Might perhaps make me a tenner..

Well, after spending considerable time attaching an Accelero S1 rev2 to my HD3870, it no longer works. Removing the cooler again showed me why - the core has been cracked in the corner. I've just reread this article. If the HD3870 really is 21dB at 30% fan speed, then it just goes to show how important noise character is - I own a stock cooled HD3870 and a Corsair HX520, rated one higher at 22dB, and the PSU is almost inaudible beneath the GPU at more than 2 feet away.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting a pair of Nexus 80s to fill those slots. If you think it'll make sufficient difference I'll do it. One thing I've noticed, since going with a Corsair HX 520W, the reduced fan speed means it practically isn't an exhaust fan any more...

To be fair, I don't really want to fan mod a PSU, as easy as it may be. In any case, I found out the Zm600-HP is nowhere near as good as the KW unit, and almost similtaneously found a cheap HX 620W at play.com, albeit it may be a few weeks before I get one since it's out of stock. Why the 620W? Why ...

Zalman Heatpipe units

Hi there, I've just read the review of the ZM-1000-HP and have been very impressed. Hi again, I've been using a pair of HD3870s in Crossfire for a month or two now, and have had about the level of success I was expecting getting the performance out of it. I have no issue in recommending Dell or Samsung monitors. If you buy Dell though, stick with the proper Ultrasharp series, I don't know if the E series is as good. If you go samsung, get the 226BW - a very fine screen that.

All I can really add to this is that there is no problem in bass clarity with the z-5500s, so I have no reason to believe it's true of the other 5000 series, such as the 5300.

Power supply potential options - limited budget...

Hi there, I currently use a Thermaltake Toughpower 750W PSU (complete overkill I know, wish I'd known when I bought it). In my current config, the fan rarely ramps up even when gaming, but at its idle speed it's not exactly what you'd call silent, I'd hazard a guess at 25-27dB at 1m. Consequently, I...

My Dell 3007WFP makes that noise at a reasonable volume (i'd guess above 25dB), but only at maximum brightness, down it just one level and the noise pretty much disappears. it also makes a different noise when you change resolutions (a hissing noise, kind of like a gas leak!) and when you turn it of...

if at all possible, get a card you can fit a Thermalright HR-03 cooler to. There's nothing quieter than no fans at all (as long as you don't have an X1900 with screaming chips like I have).

The Zalman CNPS7000 is only quiet enough at 5V. Anything above and your PC will not be silent. Try running the Nexus 92mm fan. 12V will suffice, but for absolute silence, I'd recommend around the 10V level, you can always get one of those resistance cables. What else is in your PC?

To make you buy the more expensive product :P At least there are plenty of silent options out there for mid-range performers. Try running a PC with a 30" monitor (that means 2560x1600 gaming) silently. Not easy, especially when the monitor itself makes more electrical noise than a silent case fan. T...
