well the vaporx i posted above is same price as the reference 5770... so I think getting the cooler would be extra $$$ Um, no. The HIS 5770 is currently selling on NewEgg for $22 less than the VaporX. The L2 is $20 + shipping at SVC, so the cost is a wash. You seem to be looking for reasons to buy ...

Regarding the case, I've used an S1 in a Fusion. You simply have to gently bend the pipes (very easy) so the cooler forms an 'L' shape. Note that this will consume one additional slot (3 total) for the GPU and cooler. Assuming you don't need the slots, this works very well. However, if you are consi...

I'm opting to get the xfx 5770 w/ stock egg cooler and then retrofit with an Accelero L2 Pro This is what I would do, except I would probably go with an S1 rev2 and mod it slightly (cut the fins back on one end to the first heat pipe). This is a very easy mod, but if you are not comfortable with a ...

Also, it turns out that Seasonic support DID attempt to contact me on the 7th, but apparently they were having problems with their email system and it never reached me. Overall I am exceptionally pleased with the support from Seasonic. The communication issue was due to an email glitch, but the TAT ...

While having a separate boot partition will help making recovery easier, say, if a virus hits you, that still doesn't help with hardware failure. Definitely! This is why I burn the OS image onto DVDs and backup the data partition to a separate HDD. FWIW, these DVDs are my official "support plan" fo...

Re: Postscript
Seasonic apparently does not seem interested in finding out why this one died (no request for the dead body Whether coincidence or not, I spoke too soon. Seasonic called me today and asked when I'll be shipping the PSU back. I actually think this is a VeryGoodThing(tm). Infant mortality effects eve...

Seasonic's response to my email was to send a brand-new (sealed-box) X-650. No warning, it just arrived on my porch via UPS less than a week after my email! Among other benefits, I now have *plenty* of extra cables, two sets of gold-trimmed pouches for the cables, and *two* velvet bags wit...

Don't worry about it much. Most PCs from the usual suspects only have one partition per drive, and that works OK for most people. OTOH, "most people" will never reinstall their OS or re-image from a backup. And "most people" have terrible backup processes. The main problem with multiple partit...

If anyone is considering the airline transport angle, this build survived the cross-country connecting flights with no hassles from the TSA. Security just ran it through the X-Ray like any other piece of luggage, and it fit easily in JetBlue's overhead bins.

Seasonic X-650 died
My 6-week old Seasonic X-650 died. I guess this is one of the "benefits" of being an early adopter. No smoke or fireworks, it just shut-off... Occasionally the 12V output will light-up for 1-2 sec, but usually nothing. I temporarily replaced the X-650 with a HX-520 and everything works f...

I've used the Ultima-90 with a Q6600 and it worked fine (stock). The TDP on the i7-860 is actually 10C lower than the Q6600, so you should be OK. I used a duct from the rear 12cm 800RPM S-Flex fan. When you compare the fin area on the Ultima-90 to the stock i7 Intel HSF, it makes sense that the Ulti...

Yes, the space between the video card and power supply is quite small! :D While Fry's was blowing them out I bought an extra one of the CM Elite 360 cases to eventually make a smaller HTPC. The NSK2480 is easy to work with, but it takes so much room in our TV cabinet that I have a hard time managing...

Thank you! :D CPU temps are ridiculously low. The AXP-140 is an excellent cooler (except for the PITA installation). From what you describe, I would also recommend the 5750. This is perfect for casual gaming and will have a long life. And while it looks funky, the stock cooler is reportedly nearly silent. Unless you have an exceptionally quiet system I doubt you would hear it. But if that is not quiet enough, you ...

i5-750 with HD5770 - Airline carry-on sized!
My son wanted a gaming computer but is in school on the other side of the US. So I was looking for a way to build a capable little machine that would be small enough to pass the stringent carry-on requirements for air travel. I also wanted it to be silent. :D I stumbled across the Cooler Master Elit...

For a laptop, an SSD is a complete no-brainer. Nothing comes close to the improved performance because laptop HDDs are *all* terrible. However I've built Win7 desktops with both SSD (Intel X25-M) and WD640 HDD boot drives, and without knowing ahead of time it is difficult to tell the difference. Boo...

I've posted some pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/cb95014/HD5770WithAcceleroTurboShortS1Rev2?feat=directlink The cooler is a Arctic Cooling "Twin Turbo" which is essentially a short version of the Accelero S1. If you are near a Micro Center (there is one in Boston), the $150 i5-750 is very tough to beat for price/performance. Combine with a P55M-UD4 (*excellent* little board) and you have a terrific combination that will handle single or multi-threaded apps extremely well. This combination also over-clock...

1) Do you plan to overclock, or run stock? IMO, stock AMD is better value for a budget system, but if you O/C, the Intel parts are better value. Since the C2D, they all easily overclock like mad. 2) How much are you budgeting for the video card? That obviously has a *huge* impact on how much is left...

I'm impressed
I just installed one, and am very impressed. They move a lot of air, start at very low speed (~400rpm?) and by my standards are extremely quiet (basically I can't hear it unless I put my head right next to the case). I combined it with an AXP-140 in a low-profile, always-on application, where this o...

The minimums for Win7 are FX5200 (gag) on NVIDIA, and ~Radeon 9600 on ATI. IOW, just about any decent card should do the trick for Aero. The CPU is going to do the heavy lifting for video editing. Personally, I'd probably go with an HD 5750 for a friend in a similar situation. For <$150 this will ha...
