10 m or 30 ft is....as noted...possible but 3-4 m or 9-12 ft....such as an adjacent room or closet is FAR easier. eSATA allows 6ft of high speed transfer -or 2m, As I recall--USB2 allows about 3 times that. If you use about 16 ga wire, which you can get at any auto parts shop, with crimp connects,that...

Well....yeah , but... "server" does not al;ways mean a lot of power-capacity. There's an ITX mobo that runs a Geode 1.4 GHZ at 18 W and I'd bet it's possible to do it with VERY minimal fan RPMs. Put a 500 G Spinpoint in an eSATA external and you move the HDD chatter to 6' away---could even mod that ...

I like the wheel. It would be doable for a single puter system-not a 2 mobo thing. A small Wine barrell could also make a pretty spiffy case...a bit of an engineering challenge. The unit I suggested for Bluefront would be a nice finished piece of Oak (or?) furniture that can look like art and have t...

For certain it will be floor-standing on casters. The filter will be on the very bottom (I think), with a 220mm fan directly above it blowing upward into the main computer chamber. I think this might be the easiest/most effective setup. The low-power board could be passively cooled by the bottom in...

Are you thinking desktop or floor standing? Are you going to use a Zen or a PSU with a fan for the main unit? I'm thinking of a layout where the footprint is about 12"x12" and a 250 mm (filtered) Would be in the top or bottom. One wall would mount the MATX (or full atx?) mobo AND it's PSU and HD.......

You're correct I am having a very difficult time silencing this rig. I experimented last night by unplugging the two front 92mm fans. To my surprise, I got about 50% improvement in term of noise reduction but at the expense of raising 4C degree on the motherboard (idle increased to 40C). I don't kn...

Re: Should I reuse a Pentium 4 or switch to a new Sempron?
[quote="sorenjacobi"]Hello all, I have been using my old Captech Decibel as a file server and audio player. A nice really silent Pentium 4 1.8 with a GeForce 6200 AGP card and an Adaptec 2810 SATA raid controller. But over the last couple of months, it has become more and more unstable. Freezes at l...

It's hard to say...If you have pretty high CPU+Case fan RPMs you can be in the 27-37 C zone. Of course...40-44 C and a lot less fan noise is probably a good target. Crystal CPU does temps too as I recall....but a real good idea-get a Digital Doc or other front panel thingy with a rep for accuracy-se...

I think that You want to aim for As quiet as these hot components allow----ant the more LARGE diameter fans-at low RPM-the better. Even consider the Xclio case than has 2 250 mm fans, and then figure you do need the PRESSURE of a fan on the heatsink If you hunt down some of Felger Carbon's posts-he ...

The "Quiet" Antecs focus on damping and restricting noise---and on a rig with a rather cool CPU/GPU---work well. They do NOT appear to do well AT ALL on a "Gamer" rig with an OC CPU + an 8800 or similar hot Vid card. The case for starters---is not very large. Volume means it takes more to build up h...

Basically....yes it is impossible in-especially, a low profile, low cubic inches case. You won't be able to get that sort of HD performance from a Via or Geode chip and onboard vid. You won't quite get a 65 nm Lima undervolted enough to have no case fans. A passive PSU still puts out heat---as does a...

I'd invest in a Sabre saw or Dremel and put some Feet on the case to add clearance. I'd cut some holes in the floor. I'd use ZERO intake fans-remove any front fan. If that is not enough......then theres gonna be a good sized fan -probably on the top or in the door. I'd prefer a 140 mm at 800 rpm or ...

Felger Carbon, I am certainly more concerned about acoustics than looks. I understand what you are saying, but I'm just not sure you are right about the noise levels. Just because a Vid card and a PSU run fanless does not mean they are not putting out heat. Do you mount that PSU externally? A nice job of getting a maxed gamer rig about as quiet as could be done. This may be a good candidate for a Crystal CPUID setup,if you can match your OC setting, and have a middle level that's a mild underclock/undervolt for those times when you need some power--but way less than an OC 6600. With the...

I think the problem is with the Gemini and not the fan; those fins are just too close together to deal with low-speed airflow. Better to use the Scythe, and mod a mini for the NB. The trick is to channel airflow considering the air path on BOTH sides of the Gemini's fins-which at least are in a pla...
