Seasonic: Silencer vs. Tornado
I've spent a while searching the site but can't find any thread relating to the difference between the Seasonic Super Silencer and the Super Tornado - could someone explain please?
Also, is the S12 worth waiting for?
Thanks

I might use this PSU in a custom wooden cube case I am still planning to build. It doesn't have the short cable problem of the the Nexus NX-4090. It doesn't have the stif cable problem of the Enermax Noisetakers. It is availlable in my country (Seasonics are not). Here's a link to a retailer in Bel...

You're right. Ralf posted a thread about the 2650 and said to steer clear as the workmanship isn't as it ought to be. Search for 2650BQE and you'll find the thread.Spod wrote:Is the 3000B closer to the 2650-BQE or the 3700-BQE in quality? I thought it was just an adapted 3700BQE chassis, am I wrong?

I'd consider one of the S939 Winchester-core AMD64s - they have a smaller core than the S754s and so use less power and are easier to cool. In fact, I think the Asus and MSI boards you mention are actually S939 boards. I'm planning my upgrade for after the new year and will probably go with the 3500...

This looks like an interesting case for my forthcoming upgrade. I'm planning a Winchester system for the new year and am considering a new case. The one may not be easy to find in Europe (I waited almost a year for my GMC to become available) but I'd really rather not get into too much modding and s...

No, it's the 90nm one I'm considering. It seems the sensible thing to do would be to wait a little for the Geforce 4 PCI-e motherboards to become more readily available. I've got to take the plunge sometime though!cansan wrote:Is this the 3500+ you are talking about?

Well, things seem to have moved along since I started my planning. I've done a ton more reading and am better armed to navigate the minefield that awaits sometime in the new year. My current thinking is that, in terms of value, the 3500+ Winchester is right in the sweet spot, but I'm wondering wheth...

I've just discovered that there are actually two 90nm S939 AMD64s (Winchesters) shipping now: the 3000+ (1.8Ghz) and the 3200+ (2.0Ghz). Here is a benchmark review of the 3000+ You make a good point about the heat. I found a link to one review but in Turkish. Still, the graphic still works: http://w...

Okay, from the posts I surmise the following: 1) no 90nm 939-socket AMD64s are presently on the market 2) the 90nm AMD64s that are on the market are all socket 754 3) 90nm is desirable because it will result in lower heat Does that seem right? Are there other advantages to a 90nm processor? When wil...

Thanks for that. Much appreciated. Some meat on the bones ;) So, now that it's looking as though an AMD64 would be the wise choice, I find yet another minefield to navigate - what socket? Am I right in thinking that the 939-socket AMD64s are the way of the future? I would imagine that these would co...

Thank you for the responses! I very much appreciate it. Now I have some bones to chew on and can start reading in earnest. I read some interesting articles on the P4 socket-775 processors and how Intel is on a campaign to make the 478-socket processors hard to find. As noise and heat are important c...

Time to upgrade and am looking for advice
My quiet system is in need of an upgrade. What I'm planning to do is take the motherboard/RAM/CPU with Zalman cooler and put it into another case; then get some new gear to go into my GMC case. I use my system a lot for video and audio editing so it can run a little hot at times if I'm not careful. ...

Maybe you can try cutting a venting hole at the bottom of the case? I've seen people do this on this forum. And btw, where did you buy your GMC case? I can't find any retail shop that sells it in North America. It's okay now I've added the 92mm fan. I still have some problems with system freezes, b...

LOL! I have actually got the A/C working better and in the same part of the room as the PC. It's even hotter today, but adding the 92mm fan seems to have helped as it's idling at 41ºC. I fired up DTEMP as well and the HDD is reading 36ºC and so far, no freezes today. I actually use the USB slots on ...

First summer with GMC
My GMC case is now into its first summer. The office moved into the attic at Christmas and the ambient temperature up there is now as high as 35ºC. Several times over the last week the PC has frozen and refused to reboot until it had had a rest (strangely, though, it booted fine into Safe Mode). MBM...

Go to the maxtor site and search for "amset." It's a command prompt utility that offers off, some or alot (I forget the exact parameters.) How to change AAM on Maxtor Drive?
I have a Maxtor 6Y120L0 drive and according to DTemp AAM is supported and enabled. The recommended value is C0h (medium acoustic emanation level) but the Current AAM Value is FEh (maximum performance). How do I change this setting to the most quiet setting? I looked at Maxtor's site and can only fin...

So what's the sound damping material supplied in the modded cases like? I presume that that is part of the reason you get such low temps - the MagicFleece is quite thick (and comfortable looking too!) so it probably raises temps by a few degrees. I'll need to check out one of these Hard Drive enclos...

GMC Neo Classic and a big problem
I got my Neo Classic up and running with the Sunbeam fan controller and some Magic Fleece sound damping material a few days ago. It took a while, but I got there. Yeah, I got stiffed with this case too when I bought it from a German dealer. No silicon coating, no sound damping, no clamshell, no fans. I was under the impression that the whole selling point of this case was its modifications for silencing, without which we have a pretty regular steel case IMO. ...
