The comment about going up to 700W with a fan is interesting. Makes me wonder why they don't release a version with a fan that only kicks in above 400W. With one of the 5000 series Radeons and a modern 6 core CPU you could have a system that runs fanless in normal use but can ramp up to heavy proce...

Re: Newegg $139.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151097 does look interesting. I wonder how it compares to the X-650 in effeciency in the 65W to 200W range. According to Mike & colleagues, it won't be any better in that regard. See the 5 posts from this point.... http://www.silentpcreview.c...

The Seasonic has a number of pluses -- casing is sturdier, with thicker metal; all of its cables are detachable; slightly higher efficiency; the patented separation of the lower voltage lines to the back panel PCB. Technologically, it's a more advanced product, even though in actual use, the differ...

So you're just saying in that sector against similar wattage units they'll be breakthrough...
But against the x-650, aside from perhaps a little more silence at higher loads, there's no improvement?

Sorry just checking

Oh yeah no doubt there's innovation in the new lower wattage fan-less Seasonics. But others have commented at badcaps & johnnyguru that it's just a 10w increment for the higher wattage models. http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?p=63529#post63529 Do you not agree with this assertion? Everything I've heard about the new x-series is it's just a "markettecture" upgrade.

Excellent, some of those points I anticipated, some I didn't know at all.
So thanks for sparing a few minutes to extrapolate the primary differences.
Tis greatly appreciated... now... time to 'flash the plastic' for an X-650!

Thanks again & all the best.

Still looking like the ultimate PSU for someone who wants the best (I don't care about its quietness), but doesn't want crazy high wattage.
I can't wait to get mine!

@MikeC, thank-you for the excellent review!

Aside from "quietness" ...
Did you find this PSU to be better in any way than the X-650?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated, thanks!

Let's face it, you're not going to get all you want for the price you want unless you do something yourself. So with this one, if you want to mod it, then this is probably the simplest design to start from... I partially agree with your logic, which is why this model ended-up on my short-list. But ...

Actually it's still there, but i suspect it'll be one of the ones to go eventually.
Mainly coz of it's build quality/aesthetics compared to some of the pricier models in my finalist list.

This is my short-list so far; except where mentioned price to the left is *roughly* the best price in Oz, in AUD. It's not exactly a short-list, & there may be ones for which I haven't adhered to my own criteria, so let me know if you notice! And I won't be surprised if I've missed a few "gems" from...

I had actually considered looking around at various 2nd-hand shops like Cash Converters etc. To see if I can find a solid, high quality, amp or receiver that's no longer working properly, but has the right dimensions. But modifying something like that to suit my needs would surely be a bucket load o...

I ruled-out both out as I wasn't a fan of their overall aesthetics. Plus I hate 2x 5.1/4" bays, tis entirely wasted space for me.* Even 2x external 3.5" is an irritation, but I can put up with it. It is not uncommon to have 19" racks/cabinets with depths in excess of 30". So there's plenty of room should one want a case of that depth.... Whether or not there is a Hi-Fi styled case with dimensions more along the lines of a typical RU enclosure is another matter. As for why one would want a cas...
