Who says it moves much air at all? Maybe it's a quiet fan because it's low rpm, just what the card needs but not allowing much overclocking.

The P4P800 northbridge heatsink is rather large and I had to get a new video card since my Geforce4 Ti4400 + Zalman ZM80 HP would not fit on this motherboard because of the northbridge heatsink. I wonder if the newer passive heatsinks they make are slightly better in this regard. It might also be vi...

Re: .

John, From your specs, it seems you have gone with stock cooling - I am waiting to see if the new Intel cooler/fan combo for the 3.06 is as effective and quiet as a Swiftech MCX-4000 with a quiet, Asus Q-power modulated fan. How are you finding it? Louder than I'd like it to be, but in my current d...

Under load temperatures never exceed about 53C when the room is warm and I'm specifically targetting full, 100% w/ hyperthreading load, i.e. two instances of seti@home. Typical under-load is about 47C. Idle temperatures? I don't really recall. Somewhere around 35-42 or so, maybe? Why Plex? I bought ...

My experience would seem to indicate that there are loud and quiet hard drives even of the same model. I guess it just depends on your allotment of bearings or something else. Maybe SR got a particularly and singularly quiet review model, but the drives out in the wild are on average a bit louder.

Maxtor "FDB" 160/200GB 7200rpm 2/8MB cache: how qu

Basically a cut & paste of my post @ SR: Hopefully the SR review is coming out soon and can answer my question more scientifically, but in the meantime I'm perfectly willing to accept subjective assessments of both idle and seek noise. I think I'll end up buying either the IBM 180GXP or the Maxtor 2...

A bit of bad news maybe. Two users in the same thread @ SR report hearing chirps (like crickets) every 5-10 minutes from their 180GXP drives. In the absence of mitigating information, I'm in a holding pattern in regards to which HDD I'll buy next. Perhaps Maxtor 200GB FDB drives. Suspended in NoVibe...

Well the major point being that it's much faster than the Barracuda drives, while being only ever so slightly louder at most. The answer to my own question is:

IBM 180GXP series, of any capacity (60-180GB, I believe)

Large capacity, -- as quiet as the Barracuda IV, almost as quiet as the slightly quieter Barracuda V.

IBM's 180GXP series: 8MB cache + Fluid Dynamic Bearings

C'T (German magazine) objective noise analysis (for those of you who don't know, these guys are very professional):

drive noise w/o accesses: 0.9 sone.
w/ accesses in "quiet" mode: 1.1 Sone.
in "fast" mode: 1.7 Sone.

For comparison, the Seagate Cuda V: 0.6
1.4
2.7 Sone

Sone is not logarithmic.
