Re: Sandy Bridge, Part 6: Recall
EDIT: I'll wait to see what kind of solutions will be available. Knowing that only the four 3Gbps ports are affected isn't horrible. Plus the eSata port on my motherboard is controlled by Marvell.

Re: josephclemente's Lian Li PC-A05NB + Blow hole-cooled HD5
I'm also wondering what you mean by the top fan frame change. Since the video card is now one additonal slot away from the top of the case, I have gutted fan frames (one on each fan) for use as a perfectly sized duct between each fan and the video card. Video card cooling works just as well as befo...

Re: josephclemente's Lian Li PC-A05NB + Blow hole-cooled HD5
I upgraded this system to Sandy Bridge. To my surprise, power consumption is very similar to the original setup. Idle has improved - it is now about 10W lower. Before: Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S RAM: A-DATA 8GB DDR2-800 After: Motherboard: Intel DP67BG CPU: Intel C...

Re: Sandy Bridge, Part 3: Gigabyte P67A-UD4 & Intel DP67BG
My DP67BG boot times are faster. Power button to "Starting Windows" screen is 19 seconds. With Hyperboot enabled, I get 14 seconds. Also, I am not getting any cold boot "second restart" issue. EDIT: I have updated my BIOS for the motherboard and upgraded the firmware on my Intel SSD. Hyperboot is no...

I never look at "In Forums". I think it was always a little behind anyway.

Re: Wireless keyboard/mouse combo for HTPC
Gyration wireless keyboard/mouse combos have worked very well for me. The only thing I don't like about their keyboard is the location of the left "Control" key - it is shifted over for the "fn" key.

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
The number of drives these home server builds can hold is impressive. I just don't get the usefulness of keeping all these drives running in order to have all media files available at once. Do most of the drives spin down when not needed? I like to have all of my uncompressed music available at once...

Re: Consumer SSD Battle: WD vs. OCZ vs. Intel
I notice an AMD system was used for this review. I recently built an AMD system with a SandForce drive and found all sorts of surprises with the AMD south bridge (I am using a SB850). A lot of people are saying that AMD's Cool'n'Quiet and C1E has a huge impact on speeds. I haven't tried disabling th...

What kind of improvement is expected by using an undersized partition on an SSD? My SSD drives have always performed great with a 100% sized partition.

Cable Management
I have the cables managed as follows: Power for SATA and PCI-E devices (except SSD drive) is routed next to the motherboard, straight up to the top. As the cables come down from the top, they plug into the devices. I have these cables together in expandable sleeving. Cable ties would work also. Moth...

Re: So who likes the new format?
I still need to get used to it. When viewing new posts, I don't like the animated scrolling text icon that appears next to some threads. I just have to train my eyes to ignore that distraction. Also, I had to write this message twice. I hit "Save" which is some sort of "Save Draft" feature. I just a...

2TB hard disk drives are popping up at under $100. A small fast SSD + large slow HDD combo is an easy choice for speed, storage and low noise. SSD is a huge performance boost, immediately noticeable. Well worth the price. I have converted a few systems at work to SSD (mostly 40GB Intel drives), and ...
