Well
I think two quad-cores is overkill for what you're doing. You need to spend some more on RAM, and possibly disk access. You might consider separate hard disks for each instance you're running. I have no problem running multiple ubuntu instances [usually running ruby on rails, which is a memory hog i...

I'd cut the sound card unless you're going to use a 5.1/7.1 surround set.... Looks like you have headphones. 5 fans + PS fan even in a P182 will be audible/able to be heard. You never will really know until you get it and plug it in, and turn it on. 2 fans [one front, one back] + CPU + PSU fan shoul...

I'd say given your budget, and modest needs, go for a fast, cheap dual core processor. If you like intel, E7XXX or E5XXX series chips would be something to look at. Even the 8 series might be something to look at, since you don't state any need for dedicated graphics, and usually thats the other exp...

I'm not suggesting that he overclocks his RAM beyond the rated timings and speed, but some RAM is designed for operation at voltages higher than 1.8V. I've got some OCZ RAM here where the label clearly indicates 5-4-4-12 timings @ 2.1V. If the manufacturer gives you ratings, the RAM should operate ...

A 4550 would be going backwards. I went from 7950GT to 8800GTS G92 [dual slot] and was pleased noise and performance. In your case, if you have the money, lookin into a GTX260 - they are supposed to be the most quiet of current high end cards. If thats too spendy, look at 9800GT's with a quiet coole...

Run 5 timings @ 1.8v, and enjoy the stability. Why sacrifice the performance if the RAM can handle it and/or is rated for it? I've got 8GB of G-Skill DDR2-800 in my system running at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V and everything is just peachy. The DIMMs are warm to the touch when under load, but not hot. I've bu...

I'd run it at 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8v. I've had really crappy luck with multiple computers running 8GB of memory, if I don't use the default voltage. [Both Corsair Dominator and Crucial Ballistix] These are computers that do heavy multitasking [vmware, cs3, sharepoint, mysql, mssql, etc etc] Run 5 timings @...

I'm also a sys admin and understand where you're coming from, having my own power efficient server. I'm not sure what kind of ideas you're looking for, but one place to save on electricity is using the onboard graphics available. You can easily get a motherboard that will decode the blueray. I belie...

After reading the whole thread twice, I'm trying to sum it all up. Please correct me if I'm wrong. 1. Most of the 4670 Cards don't fully utilize the power saving capabilities built into the reference card. 2. Most of the 4670 Cards have noisy fans [from both the thread and the newegg reviews] 3. The...

Re: Is my RAM a bottleneck?
The weakest link appears to be your old 8800GTS. 4GB is cheap and would help level load times but probably not much else. How depressing, when a 8800GTS is an "old" card. I have a G92 GTS, and now its "old" =( Why the heck don't you just spend the 40$ for 4gb and eliminate the possibility of a ram ...

I have a USB Sony External DVD Writer that I think is surprisingly quiet. Came with a server that didn't have a dvd drive in it. Better yet, I can stash it 10 feet away from my desk if I want for the noise. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DRX840U-External-Dual-Layer-Burner/dp/B000SKWE9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF...

Your big noise problem is going to be the CPU and the GPU. That's a nice big heat sink, so I think CPU is covered. GPU is always hit and miss, you're going to get it and it will be quiet, or will be noisy... And you will have to adjust from there. Using good 120mm fans like you are will help. I'd pu...

Though 740G doesn't support sound over HDMI, 780G supports 2ch LPCM over HDMI. If you want to simplify the mess of cables behind your computer, that's the key point. Were I you, I'd jusy purchase a 4350 or 4550 and install it on existing 6150 board as it costs less to upgrade whole system and provi...

Advice for Fileserver-HTPC
Currently I have a ASUS M2N32-PV, with an 1.9Ghz Athlon BE-2300. This motherboard uses the Nvidia Geforce 6150 onboard chipset. Currently its hooked up through a DVI to HDMI converter cable, and audio is run separately. This machine was originally set up with low power consumption in mind, since its...
