I installed WinXP on my new SATA Samsung on an ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe board direct from a CD, without messing about with floppies, by slipstreaming the SATA drivers into a new CD image of WinXP. This way the SATA drivers are automatically loaded from the install CD when they are needed (ie. the bit where...

Also depends what sorts of games you play :) If you're not into FPS, then half-decent LCDs are fine for games.

I've been hanging around here for about 6 months now, and after going up a number of blind alleys with my pruchase decisions I think I've now got a system that represents an end-point in my quest for a quiet PC. It's not totally silent, but I do often find myself looking at the lights to tell if it'...

It's deifnitely possible, an old Sun workstation I used to work on years ago had a very nice quiet, smooth feeling keyboard. A real pleasure to use. They were about £300 a pop though  (for replacement parts)

My Spinpoint runs at between 34-40C. It's suspended in a NoVibes in a 5.25" bay, sandwiched between a CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives, no active cooling of the drive itself. Case temp typically maxes out around 31-34C after a few hours of heavy load. I've just bought 3x40mm Adda fans, I'm going to try mod...

The downside is that the whole kaboodle warms my case up quite a bit, but I can't see how the choice of cooler would make any difference. Yes, some people have experienced problems with their units. Some, like myself have not. Still, I think it's rather snarky to say they make bad products with only one good batch. I wasn't stating it as fact, merely suggesting it as an alternative interpretation. Sure, screw-ups happen. Reputations ...

nutball -- Your thermistor was screwed to the heat sink? Mine's not. It's nestled between the transformer coil, a large capacitor, and two mosfets, but touching none of these. Any tips or hints on things I can do to get this SST 300 fan to slow down? It's a vornado in there! I opened mine up and a) reversed the fan so it's sucking cold air in through the back, and b) unscrewed the temperature sensor from the heatsink. This latter mod probably means the thing will overhea...

Isn't 75C :!: a little too high for comfort? Why not just run your fan at 12V (assuming this is still quieter than stock nvidia cooler). If temps are too high, then why not get a 120mm fan over the fx5900u? Maybe it's just me, but if I paid $300+ (assuming 128mb) or $499 for a video card, 75degC se...
