Re: My updated Solo

Been a while.... sooooo, the X-650 caught fire. Flames coming out of the back, loud crackling noises, dimming lights in the house, screaming wife... Somehow the breaker didn't break. Ran to the computer and unplugged it. My wife saw the whole thing, she was in the same room. I just saw the blue smok...

Re: Care to help a newb give their rig the silent treatment?

Welcome to SPCR !!! The first thing you can try, is to remove the filters on the input side, just to see if the noise changes. You can also try to stop one fan at a time, or slightly change the speed of one : sometimes the resonance between 2 fans can cause the symptoms you describe, and changes in ...

Re: Super Efficient Cars [very large pictures]

Nice post Neil, thanks ! I wonder what kind of real-life fuel economy we'll see... It looks low to the ground, was that your impression ? (I'm thinking ease of access)

Same cd as the Model S. The 2014 MB CLA250 will do even better as far as cd is concerned. Not for fuel economy though :p

Re: be quiet! Shadow Rock Slim CPU Cooler

Thanks for the review.
I'm a bit surprised to see it ranked in the "Editor's Choice" category given the average mounting system. I guess the low cost and the performance are more than enough to counterbalance the mounting system issues.

Re: How to silence your car

This is off topic, but no, wind is NOT a better solution than PV arrays. Why ? Because electricity is most needed on hot or on cold days (depending where you live). And on those days, there is no wind... What's missing, is an electricity storage solution that performs well both at the grid level, an...

Re: Help in silencing ASUS 560ti (DirectCU II cooling)

Welcome to SPCR !!! 1- Dis-assembly should be easy, it's usually just a few small screws (heatsink cover and fans) 2- If your fans fit the power connector on the card, get a Y splitter and you can plug 2 fans in 1 header. If they don't fit, you can use a fan connector on your motherboard or a conne...

Re: looking for a printer that wont screw me over.

I have a Brother B&W laser printer connected to the wireless network. One new high yield toner for $40 (the real Brother brand, not a cheaper refill) prints about 2,500 pages. I'm very happy with it. They have a color version : HL3170CDW ($260 at the egg) What's your budget ? $260 might look like a ...

I don't think this card is powerful enough at idle to make much a difference in your system. Maybe one or 2 degrees, if that.

If your setup hasn't changed, don't get a blower style card, it'll never be quiet... Go for something with more fans and a larger cooler (I have had good luck with the Gigabyte Windforce coolers)

Re: How to silence your car

Buy an electric! I bought a Volt two months ago [snip] I'll be very interested to see how it drives in the snow, and what the fuel economy is. Diesel fuel is more expensive than regular in the US : $3.194 a gallon for regular gas, $3.832 for diesel (source http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_gnd_dc...

Re: How to silence your car

I'm not sure I follow you. The battery is the tank, not the fuel. All you can say is that the tank of fuel is less heavy that the battery, regardless of whether it is full or not. So you are displacing a constant weight when you use electricity, not when you use regular gas (and maybe mileage improv...

Re: How to silence your car

I just filled up my tank this morning : $3.29 a gallon The cheaper the gas the worse it is for electric vehicles.... Higher prices will drive demand for more efficient vehicles, including diesel and electric. The sad part is that gas is a short term vision of the market. A company that misses the el...

Re: How to silence your car

I think an important part of the comparison is being missed : the i3, model S, leaf are ELECTRIC !! It's very true you can get a fancy BMW 5 series for the price of a Model S, but the series 5 (sedan) is not electric and it's fuel economy is terrible !! the 2013 series 5 does 34 mpg highway and 23 (...

Re: Want to help Corsair build the [quietest] case ever?

my turn :) a few notes : PSU in it's own chamber, at the top of the case (allows bottom intake fan to be closer to where fresh air is needed) bottom only intake to keep noise away, 3*120 or 3*140 mm fans HDDs sideways, to minimize airflow interference Solid top to keep stuff from falling in the case...

Re: How to silence your car

Interesting conversation here. Just a couple of things... What happens when a gas powered vehicle runs out of gas : it is stuck and you have to push it... Same as an electric vehicle :) . Yes you can get a can of gas, walk to a gas station, and refill your car, and hopefully it will start. Electric ...

Hi MattP, Thanks for posting the video. I've seen mods like this done before, using those integrated closed loop liquid coolers. You can even have the radiator out of the case :) My next mod is actually exactly what you did with a GTX460, but with a 92mm tower cooler (no room for anything higher). H...

I sat in a parked Model S a few weeks ago, the car was on, but the lack of noise is strange. I love it. I wish I could have driven it around the block. There is a person in town who has one, I'm jealous !
It's also a very roomy car (compared to my Elantra anyways  )

Welcome to spcr. Personally i would see that my case fans run on fixed voltage like 7 or 9v. CPU fan should be RPM or pwm controlled by BIOS. Finally GPU, should also be equipped with a quiet fan solution and/or modded Isle RPM via BIOS hack. I'm obviously no fan of Software (which could fail) or n...

Where do you see the most dust ? Bottom of case ? GPU ? It's a lot of questions about dust but I'm curious to see how the natural airflow affects where the dust settles PS : fanless is cool. And yes, you can always get a better "quieter" faster rig, but it's not fanless. And who knows, maybe you DO ...
