Re: I want a quiet 2.5" HDD

Many 2.5" HDDs do the head park thing, but instant spindown is a new for me. But I rarely play around with 2.5" HDDs and the only 2.5" HDD I have my hands on right now is a WD Black 160GB. Came with my netbook, which now has a small SSD. The WD Black behaves, doesn't even park it's heads it seems, ...

Re: I want a quiet 2.5" HDD

I'm sure I'm hearing a spin up sound. I'm also hearing clicking sounds that could be the heads parking. The lag/delay and noises are worse in Mac OS X than Windows, but neither is acceptable for any sort of use as a data storage drive. I'll probably just return it. I'd really like to find a 2.5" dri...

Re: I want a quiet 2.5" HDD

Well, I got the WD Blue 2.5" and installed it. This drive spins itself down regardless of hard disk sleep settings in Windows 7 or Mac OS X. So unless the drive is actually reading or writing it is not spinning. This is really annoying because there is a noticeable delay anytime you access the drive...

Re: new build soon

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa264/toronado455/top_zps9afcd3f3.jpg I got the 2.5" WD Blue and moved some things around. I put the two SSDs up in the ODD area to make room for the WD HDD in the bottom mount spot (the only actual 2.5" drive mount in the case). http://i203.photobucket.com/albums...

Re: Antec Three Hundred Two - front fans obstructed?

Here's a revised proposal. The crosshatch pattern shows where metal would be removed. In trying to determine which horizontal supports to leave in (in order to accommodate two drives), I figure that the center ones would perhaps be best because they cross the fan hub which produces no (or little) ai...

Re: I want a quiet 2.5" HDD

i have a blue 2.5 1TB drive in my PC at the moment. Easily the quietest 2.5" drive i've ever had, but still audible. Head noise is also pretty low as well. If you are worried about drives spinning down, theres an option in windows power settings to never power down the drives. I however set mine to...

Re: I want a quiet 2.5" HDD

Thanks. The Seagate Momentus XT seems very nice and FAST, but also more money. Listening to those audio recordings, the Scorpio Blue seems quieter than the HD502HI, which I have and never hear (except for at boot or shutdown). So it seems I don't need anything quieter than the Scorpio Blue. My only ...

I want a quiet 2.5" HDD

I want a quiet 2.5" HDD. I'd like to get the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB. Is that a quiet drive, or are there issues with frequent head parking and/or spin up/down noises?

Can I get away with a Scorpio Black 2.5" (7200 RPM) in this system, or is there going to be idle whine?

Re: 3770K IHS removal and results

We still don't know why Intel opted to go this route...I don't think is was to save a few pennies. My guess: is that it's something to do with the 22nm process node. Maybe the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between the silicon in this process and the solder used was too high...maybe...

Re: 3770K IHS removal and results

Haswell uses TIM under IHS, link to pictures: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?286340-4770k-4670K-IHS-Removals I was hoping Ivy Bridge was a fluke, and it would go back to soldered with Haswell. But appears TIM is here to stay? Fanless tech says "...seriously worried about passive...

Re: This may be the Holy Grail of silence

So the main market is people who need legacy serial ports? What sort of equipment doesn't support USB? If they want to include the COM ports, they should just put them on the back with the rest of the I/O where they belong. Edit: Not that I disagree with you. It seems like they had some corporate c...

Re: This may be the Holy Grail of silence

Those serial ports must be a mistake. There are people who have equipement you need serial ports for... the kind of equipment you'd put next to someone's bed perhaps? Or possibly people concerned about dust issued? I guess that would be the point of fanless + serial. For a lot of serial-driven equi...

Re: This may be the Holy Grail of silence

FanlessTech has posted some pictures of the DS47: http://www.fanlesstech.com/2013/04/shuttle-ds47-first-pictures.html Interesting computer. I've considered Ivy Bridge (in general) as a stop-gap ever since the whole thermal paste gate thing. Not that it matters for my usage.

Re: This may be the Holy Grail of silence

My main Mini is a 2012 ( most recent) with an i7. I also have a 2010 server Mini which is silent and an older 2007 one, also silent. OK. I was going to ask if you noticed any difference or improvement in fan noise with the 2012 model with the new fan design (left). However, if all your minis are eq...

Re: This may be the Holy Grail of silence

I have had a NUC for around 2 months. I have the Ethernet model with the i3. I mainly use it to run XBMC, Netflix, Hulu+ under windows 8. It's a great system For 1.5 months it was completely silent but recently I have been hearing the fan occasionally and it's whiny. I will probably order a Tranqui...

Re: cleaning Silverstone fan filter

Its a blower and yes, it has a lot of power. Has almost a full horse power of power and puts out about 70 CFM. The hose ends aren't very large, which means there is a lot of pressure behind the air. It has about 10x-15x the power of compressed air (if I had to guess). I use it for dusting everythin...

I just finally got around to cleaning my Silverstone fan filters yesterday. Went very well. I just used running water and a bit of Dawn liquid. Very easy. Im intersted on your build, specially on how the gigabyte handles the pwm fans, maybe you can share your experience. Well, I don't have that much knowledge about it. Re: Antec Three Hundred Two - front fans obstructed?

The Antec 300 was originally a budget-priced case. But this is no longer true of the current versions. In the UK certainly it is priced not much less less than the Corsair Carbide 300R. Rather than attempting to modify the Antec buying the 300R could be a better option. The 300R comes with one fron...
