Re: AMD & Intel 65W Stock Coolers

It could be argued that if the review was focused on answering your second point, the standard test could be abandoned... but as you'll see below, that opens up a can of worms. The answer to the second question is dependent on many factors: ... The interpretation of your standard test results is de...

Re: AMD & Intel 65W Stock Coolers

Nice review (as always), if read for what it is! What bugs me a little is that the review's objective is only to compare how well these coolers perform compared to previously tested coolers in a situation (high TDP CPU) they should never encounter. From a consumer/user perspective that's totally ir...

What do I think about that? Hmmmm. Good that you made amends with Mr. Kwan and continue a dialog. Sure a retest is interesting... But perhaps not as definitive as one might think. Why? 1. Natural accuracy of all review site cpu heatsink testing platforms is no better than 1 degree C. IE, repeat the ...

Re: Will Ninja 4 lose performance over time?

I've been testing heatsinks, using them, monitoring them, etc, since before this site was created... probably 15+ years. I have never noticed any cooling performance drop over time with a heatsink that has friction fit heatpipes running through thin fin stacks. In fact, except for one or 2 heatsinks...

Re: New Mac Pro Case for PC, is this real?

So i have been doing some more reading on this and it seems like this case has some decent testing results and had a engineer help with the thermal problems .. the company claims: "When testing with the equipment listed we used Prime 95 to do 100% stress test on all cores on the CPU. Re: New Mac Pro Case for PC, is this real?

The Mac design could be done only because it was designed around a single set of internal hardware. As soon as you introduce the possibility of many different component options in the build, such an integrated cooling design become virtually impossible. It's the age-old PC vs Mac thing. But this is ...

Re: AMD Wraith cooler: really "near silent"/"whisper quiet?"

Why would SPCR readers/fans be interested in a 39 dBA CPU cooler? The Wraith, with its 80mm fan & top down heatpipe design, looks like something from aftermarket sources going back at least 10 years. It's a throwback, not an advance. There are umpteen coolers in our test database that are far, far q...

Re: Loudness etc: Tempest in a Teapot

When you listen to recorded music at a volume that's lower (or higher) than that of the actual performance there's a kind of "cognitive dissonance" present. Partly it's because you have a notion of what the actual loudness was, but it's also because the acoustic waveform of musical instruments is d...

I remember finding Linkwitz site and immersing myself in his writing, and the speaker designs. In the end I chose another route, still dipole, still with active crossover and multiple amplifiers. It would be great to hear a pair of Orions one day. Mike, I'm curious how much time and money it took t...

Woah! Take a step back... Yes, clearly you have your own interpretation of what is audio high fidelity and you're unwilling to entertain different conceptions of what could be high fidelity. I've never insisted my definition of HiFi is the only one; imo, it's the same as any other musicophile might ...

1. High volume -- I enjoy this best, but can't or don't do it for that long, perhaps 90 minutes at most. The peaks don't quite reach 90 dB @ 2m. Good thing you're working on those 400W amps! :D For example, the Seas W22EX-01 is 88 dB/1w/1m. It's only being asked to drive less than half the frequenc...

Mike, just out of curiosity, have you measured power consumption for any of your amps? Seems that the switchers should be MUCH better, but this is SPCR - we like numbers. I have, but didn't record them. I do recall being very surprised at how little power was needed for all the amps I measured, eve...

Re: Linkwitz Orion speaker project

Sweet build Mike. About how your system sounds at low volumes - this is the tradeoff that happens with Class AB or D amps - distortion for these amp topologies is mostly constant across power output, which allows low distortion % at high power, at the cost of higher distortion % at low power. To do...

3.5 HDD x2 or 2.5 HDD x3 -- on bottom, but they interfere with all but a single slot card. Even with a single slot card, cooling might become an issue.

Slim ODD or 3.5 x1" -- in front you can have one or the other. You might be able to fudge a 2.5" here too.
