Unfortunately a lot of people found the Asus 6850 to be louder than the SPCR sample was.

Re: Miraculous energy-efficiency of AMD Brazos platform "a m
If we used a Pico PSU and used more efficient boards for each of the chips, is there reason to believe that the AMD energy performance would have improved more than the Intel energy performance would improved... or vice versa? Are there any other testing issues that I am overlooking? Yes, I think i...

Re: U. of Bath distributes DC to power library PCs
That's cool but... How much did it cost? How efficient is it? How long before the "break even" point? If they really wanted to be green, they should have used photovoltaic solar panels to create DC electricity to feed the computers when they are used most- during the day. They are still doing AC to ...

Microcenter actually had the i3-2100 for $99 with a FREE motherboard 2 weeks ago. Last week they had the i3-2100 + motherboard for $119. I almost bought one just to have it. And yes, you can color me a Sandy Bridge "fan boy" as well. Hey, it's like magic on a chip. I do think there is something to t...

The 600W would most likely have higher resale value. That's a positive right there.
Plus, if the 600W is actually MORE efficient, than that totally makes up for a couple $$ more in extra initial cost.

Newegg has the FSP Aurum Gold 400W PSU for $80 with free shipping.
It's tempting but it may be louder than what I currently have- plus with my case it's designed to use rear-blowing PS if needed. It does appear 18A is more than enough for my video card, though.

No! You are - more probably that not - "overreacting". AFAIK lodestar should be fully aware of actual power requirements. Moreover any possible efficiency gap is - more probably that not - marginal (in this case). The fact remains that going for a 600W is - more probably that not - however p...

Re: One or two fan for a CPU cooler: does it worth?
It looks like on average we see a delta T of 3 degrees C between 1 fan and 2 fans. On the other hand, you have 5-6 dB increase in noise output. So essentially a fairly small decrease in temperature for a doubling in noise output. Is it worth it? That depends on a number of factors, but #1 is what CP...

Re: Miraculous energy-efficiency of AMD Brazos platform "a m
What we know about computers- I think some of this was actually mentioned in the thread you (CES) started- 1) for idle power consumption, the motherboard consumes much more power than the CPU does. 2) Motherboards vary widely in power consumption from one to the next. 3) Power supplies are not effic...

Re: Enermax Modu87+ 500W vs 600W
there is less than two pounds difference between the price of the 500w and 600w models of the Coolermaster. In that situation the larger capacity model is worth the fairly minor extra investment. No! Why would you need 600W instead of 500W? Most general use machines use less than 200W. Look at the ...

Re: System overhaul - now noisy -.-
You need to get rid of that stock Intel CPU cooler ASAP. It's barely adequate now and also too noisy. Almost anything would be better, but check out the Coolermaster Hyper 212 or Xigmatec HDT coolers. They are relatively inexpensive and offer a large upgrade in performance. If you can undervolt the ...

5770 is a pretty good card, I used to have one. You could also think about a 6850 with an aftermarket cooler such as GeLid Icy Vision. The 6850 is about 25-30% faster in DX10 games and 50% faster in DX11 games than a 5770, while using only 10W more at full load. It's idle power consumption is very r...

Google search Pico PSU, there is a good website with lots of products and information on it. I would also look at mini ITX boards, and consider using an i3-2100 instead of the AMD fusion. It's way faster and still very low power consumption. Sounds like a fun project, keep us posted!

Alas, my Reciever is from 2004 and does not have HDMI. It's too expensive for me to think about replacing it right now for something with similar sound quality. I used EAC this weekend and I like it OK. Quality seems good, but seems fairly slow and not too intuitive. It's not super automated, I have...

Because they are more efficient, you should take a look at the ATI Radeon cards. In particular, the HD 6850 is roughly the same performance as the 460 GTX 1GB. If you step up to the 6870, that is more like a 470 GTX. Both could be fitted with a GeLid Icy Vision and be made silent, even while gaming ...

Um, mercury is expensive and poisonous. It's a hazardous substance which is a pain in the ass to clean up/dispose of. It's probably not very efficient eitehr. This is a horrible idea.

That's what I was thinking, but it's nice to see it discussed. I had heard that Digital Coax is better than Digital Optical, mainly for the reduction in Judder, but that could just be "folk wisdom".
