home manufacturer... get the appropriate diameter nuts/bolts/washers... I wouldn't worry too much about tension, use your good judgement there. :)

Exactly. That fixes the mounting system issue by removing the push-pins (which are adequate for Intel retail and throughly inadequate for the added weight of the Ninja). :)

Depends how much noise is a concern; you don't need much airflow for your proposed setup. I would go with the 1200rpm SFF12E's if you're noise sensitive, although if you go with a fan controller then grab the faster 1600rpm ones and throttle 'em down as needed.,

Not really. Traditionally server-grade PSUs are far more overbuilt than their consumer counterparts, and hence can handle higher peak loads... but the Seasonic stuff is already pretty nice, and PCP&C's consumer-marketed stuff isn't exactly server-grade like what I'm used to either...

The ICH7R has one PATA port on it, I didn't think Asus used the JMicron for PATA support til the P965-based boards?

(it's kinda silly if they did, but MB makers often don't make sense...)

Bizarre!

The ICH7R should be fine with SATA opticals.

Seagate has some white papers on this-- soft mounting, at least on older drives (the white paper is fairly old) showed a noticeable worsening of access times, but if you seek silence, it's probably worth the trade-off.

If you're on an Intel ICH8 or later board (or nVidia equivalent) I would go SATA. NEC was best of breed til the ND-3550A; nowadays I believe Lite-On, LG, Samsung, Pioneer, have marginally better drives, but the gap is very slim. As Arvo points out each particular model has its own strengths and weak...

It's got dual +12v out, traditionally +12V1 goes to the main ATX connector and peripherials, +12V2 goes to the ATX12V connector... although that's often different these days.

Either way, as you found, I wouldn't have expected any problems... :)

At 150RPM, the heat sink will, for all practical purposes, be purely passive. I don't think the fan will push enough CFM to cool a gnat! Practical implementation is that the drives will always be powered-on, without a backplane and a direct connection to the PSU instead, the drives will NOT support staggered spin-up. You're talking about +65A @ +12v on startup and +35A or so on the +5v line, which is pretty large for a consumer-grade...

Staggered spin-up requires backplane support as well, if memory serves. However so long as your controllers are delayed in start, that generally works. http://www.storagereview.com/HD501LJ.sr?page=0%2C5 Shows a bit less than +1A on +5v at startup. 32 drives is quite a lot, although you should be ok ...

Try simply using more thermal grease and see what your temps are. The whole spread-it-thin-like-a-razor trick often results in insufficient amounts of thermal grease.
