Thanks. I use a fan controller which gives me complete control over the speed of all my fans. I do not need a pwm fan, I think.

new cpu TRUE fan

I have been using a Noctua NF-S12 a little undervolted as my cpu fan (from a Zalman ZM MFC1 speed controller). The cpu heatsink is a Thermalright Ultra Extreme. The S12 is not silent and even at lowish rpms is still quite audible. Temps achieved are fine (Mobo: 39C CPU: 37C). Is there an obvious fan...

Thanks. This all makes sense to me. Can you advise on a decent 256Gb SSD, please? I know they are very expensive but I would like to get one with a large capacity. Is SSD technology changing very quickly? Is there any reason to wait 6 months or just go ahead now?

Sensible upgrade?

I have a Q9550 cpu on an Asus P5K Premium m/board and 8Gb of memory. I am using x2 300Gb Velociraptors and an ATI Radeon 4850 vga card (that has no built in fan but is cooled by a suspended fan). I have these installed in an Antec P182 case and use an Enermax Modu82+ 625W power supply. OS is is W7 6...

I have the Matrox M9125 and the image quality is high - it fully meets my needs - and the IQ is certainly as good as that of my Gigabyte 9600GT.

"You should expect identical image quality for any GPU in 2D use, as long as you are using a full-digital signal path (DVI to LCD for example). This is different from the past when we had CRTs or LCD with VGA connector. If you notice a difference in image quality with 2 GPUs like this, you need to R...

Thanks. I opted for a passively cooled Matrox M9125. Image quality is very good though the driver is a bit rudimentary - eg there is no temps gauge for the gpu and since installing the M9125 display callibrated Colour Profiles (indeed any colour profiles) won't stay installed. It has had a great eff...

Gigabyte tech support told me to do a clean reinstall of Vista. I won't be doing this. I'll wait for a suitable passively cooled ATI based card like the HD4850.

The ATI 3870 is nearest to your 9600. If you have your eye on a good passive one that might be the way to go. Alternatives: 4850/4870 - significantly more powerful than your current card, not needed I would think as you don't game. 4670 - just being released now, about 15% less performance in games...

Thanks. I'll have to move to an ATI. I don't know anything about their models - which model is roughly equivalent to a 9600?

I don't see why the low power warning would be identified as a Vista problem - I have had Nvidia based cards operating fine under Vista.

Nvidia System Sentinel problem

I have recently started getting the Nvidia System Sentinel warning message that tells me that my graphics card performance has been reduced because the card is not getting enough power. The performance (eg on internet page scrolling) is now noticeably poorer and I wondered if anyone here had had thi...

I'll trade you one of yours for mine... I have it suspended using stretch magic in a 5.25" bay, and it's by far the noisiest thing in my case. That's saying a lot since I'm still using the stock cooler on my 9800 GTX+. And no, the stretch magic isn't so tight that it's relaying the vibrations to th...

Velociraptors innocent after all...

The problem turned out not to be the Velociraptors at all. I took the build apart and with a stethoscope found the culprit was actually my 650W Be Quiet Dark Power Pro psu. It took some tracking down because the hum was diffuse. There is a small amount of hum from the Velociraptors but it is not not...

Velociraptors - high pitched hum

I have x2 velociraptors in NoVibes III cradles (icepaks off) set in the lower cage of a P182 (using the rubber grommets). They are producing a high pitched hum and slight buzz - heard through the P182 side panel. The hum is not loud but when sitting a couple of feet away diffusely intrusive. I don't...

Persistent hum with P182

I recently completed a P182 build which has a persistent highish pitched hum. The build is: Asus P5K Premium; Q9550/TRUE/Noctua P12; Be Quiet 650W psu; x2 Velociraptors in NoVibes III suspension cradles lower front container cooled by 12mmx120mm Kama fan; passive vga Asus EN8600GT; x1 suspended (on ...

Installing Zalman ZM-MFC1 Plus in a P182

I'd like to install a Zalman ZM-MFC1 Plus fan controller in my P182 but can't work out how to do it because rails that have to be fixed to the fan controller in order for it to be installed in a 5.25" drive bay and none of the screw holes match up. I am ready to drill out some new holes if I have to...

My velociraptors were around 53+ degrees each before I added the lower fan. They are now 37 and 34 degrees. I am happy with that and having the flexibility to add more air easily if I need to. I would not be happy to rely on the psu alone having lost a Seagate from heat that way. The lower fan is in...

Fan for lower front hdd bay in the P182

In my P182 build I wanted to stick my x2 Velociraptor hdds in the lower front bay. I had already removed the middle lower fan and holder because they got in the way of my psu cables and the cables into the hdds. Initially, and having read the reviews, I thought I could do without a fan on the lower ...

Thanks very much for your advice. I am reassured. My Scythe Slipstream is 0.26 amps, the 3 Nexus fans are 0.3 amps each and the slim Scythe fan is 0.16 amps - I think this adds up to 1.32 amps so I should be alright.

Just wanted to check.

Can x5 120mm fans be connected to a motherboard?

I've recently read in a couple of places on the web that one should not plug case fans - and particularly 120mm fans - into a motherboard. Is this true? My Asus P5K Premium has fan connectors for one cpu fan, three chassis fans, and one power fan. I assumed that because the connectors are there, the...
