Thanks for the heads up; that'd make it virtually worthless to pay double for the adhesive stuff.

Well, yeah...that's what I'm doing now. LOL! Like I said, it's just attached inside the heatpipe cooler, sitting on top of a sheet of antistatic plastic, draped over a piece of packing foam, on top of a double-layer of the thin foam I was using before, at floor of the case. I'm relying on the ...

Alright, it looks like I've accidently found my solution. It's not entirely dead silent, but from any distance of over two feet away, if I don't point my head at the machine (for example, if I just look at the screen), there is zero sound (and it's 2:00am right now; there's little to no street traff...

I guess I won't be moving Sigma One for the time being... I'm taken the drive out of the half-height bay and have it sitting on top of a double-layer of the foam at the case floor. Let's see what SMART finds out with this sort of usage. I'll be using this setup until I order myself a new drive. I'm ...

Sorbothane w/adhesive backing -- UPDATED: Innovative use...
Regarding the sorbothane strips and sheets from McMaster-Carr... On the sorbothane that comes with adhesive backing, is the adhesive backing on both sides, or just one side? What I may do is purchase a laptop drive, mount it inside a SilentDrive enclosure (al bundy-style) and then mount the whole sh...

MikeC and al bundy were right!--Updated: Pictures!
Anyone have any experience with the Travelstar 5K80? I'm looking at the 40GB model; it's rated for typical idle and load of 2.1/2.6 bels and maximum idle and load of 2.4/2.8 bels, according to this. That's means it never even hits 30 decibels! -Ed EDIT: After reading about the place, I noticed that ...

They compare the Papst Multifan 3312 to AcoustiProducts' AF92CT.
Just appending this to the rest of the thread; maybe we can keep this as an unofficial AcoustiFan thread or something.

I've used Vantec's Stealth Pro 92mm fan and it's attrocious.
Go with the AcoustiFan AF120CT; my review is right here.

5400rpm Samsung drives are notoriously hard to find; I looked for them too, but finally settled on the 7200rpm model. However, it's been said before that the laptop hard drives are quieter, anyway. They come in 4200, 5400 and 7200rpm varieties, and are quite easy to find. The 2.5- to 3.5-inch conver...

That would be why I give up; there's no way I can figure out that wouldn't introduce an extra noise source. If I closed off the duct, I would then have to install a fan to the CPU; the only thing cooling it is the stream of cold air coming in from the side duct (the only intake in the whole system);...

That's just thing thing though, Ralf... When I ran the drive without the foam wrap, the average temp was still above 39C. The main reason why I'm not worried about the foam is that, as I mentioned before, if it's already doing something like 43C, just how much worse could 47C (extreme load; I never ...

I already read your wonderfu lreview of that dandy piece of equipment, and I definitely can't fit my OS along with my collection of FLACs on it :(. Solution #1: I'm trying to get ultimate silence so that it does not intrude on my listening experience, so it's actually the other way around. Solution ...

I'm not sure I understand you, xilles; please reiterate. I'm using Sandra's Burn-In Wizard right now, Storage system only. I'll let it continuously run for all night, and keep MBM's SMART log going. I'll post an update later tonight after a few hours, and then tomorrow I'll up the MBM log results. -Ed

Unfortunately, being insane as I am, while this is better, it's still not good enough (I can still hear the drive at 4:30 in the morning from two or three feet away. I want no sound. I want silence. I want dead silence. Perhaps it's too much to ask, but if there's something I can try that works even...

Well, the system had been running for about five days straight now (no shut down, no restarts, nothing; straight run) and I immediately handled the drive after opening up the system. I was able to handle the drive without issue and it felt merely warm, not so much as all that hot even (the drive was...

In that case I would go with the 7K250; not counting the guaranteed failure of Deathstars, I personally have more faith in the IBM/Hitachi drives (personal, historical experience). I've had no IBM drives, except for my pair of 75GXPs, go bye-bye on me. As for Maxtor, one of the Diamond MAX Plus 9 6Y...

Cheers! Glad to know I've been helpful. I actually tried my spare AF80CT in that position and it did have the same turbulence issue, plus... The turbulence wasn't really, really bad in any measure; it was primarily noticeable because Sigma One is so darn quiet. That, and the fact that I've gotten to...
