Re: Loudest case. Ever...

I'm sure the cooling is superb, but it sure soudns like a Harrier taking off. Vertically. In a small room. Empty, with no furniture & stuff to dampen the sound. Most Socket A heatsinks are backwards compatible with Socket 370.

I am somewhat amazed at how little heat the later model Pentium 3 produces. I have a 930mhz Coppermine-T, and it really makes very little heat. I only have one fan in the system now (a 80mm scythe at 5v) and it is perfectly happy.

Anything over 700W is pure marketing. It's just like +2L engines. Why would you need, say, 5L V8, or any bigblock? Only reason I see is for such engines to go with cars like Chargers and police Crown Vic's so we can watch some good chases. Remember Bullit ? No, seriously, if you don't know what's i...

Not really. A Nexus is only a dollar more, and the CFM is very low.

Personally, i would buy two Yate Loons instead.

Its going to be used as a storage drive in a backup machine ( which will be idling most of the time). I have used several old Fireballs in the past, and If i can stand them I suppose I can stand this. The reason that I want to use it is that I read that they were pretty fast for their time.

IBM Deskstar DTLA-305020

I recently acquired one of these drives from a 800mhz Pentium 3 IBM desktop that had been sitting powerless for about a year. I just took it out of the case, and my first thought was "Oh cool, a deathstar!" http://www.herforder-vinothek.de/pc/pics/hdd2.gif I know the old 75GXP (was it?) had a ...

Re: More Seagate 5400.3 "Thunking"

Seagates have always made random "clicking" "buzzing" "ticking" "thunking" sounds depending on which model you have. Whenever the drive is idle it moves the internal parts around to increase their life. It's normal but annoying. You arent kidding. I have a 80gb ST380011A and it makes all kinds of t...

Coil whining on DSL modems

Anyone else have a problem with that?

I have a Speedstream model (not sure which one), and it has an EXTREMELY loud coil whine. Its more noticeable when torrenting or other heavy downloading.

It drives me insane.

The Thermalright SI-97a is a very capable choice.

I am running a socket 939 Opteron on it and it works for that, so you should be fine.

I would suggest the Scythe Katana, but I cannot find it in stock anywhere anymore. It fits everything, and it should be able to handle that load.
