I think it will work just fine, inputs generally have high impedance
and will not behave like a resistive load at low frequencies (a few
MHz and less)

General answer: You shouldn’t worry about the noise level at maximum load, since it's unlikely that your system draws 300W. The test doesn’t say anything about the noise levels at 150W, which much more interesting. I haven't tried the FSP300-60GRE, but FSP PSU’s are usually good value for the money....

There is no reason to wait for the PSU do damage other components.

Nope, there is no feedback from the fan controller to the PSU. Just connect your fan to any power source.

I used a 4700uF (or was it 6800?) cap from an old amp.
and connected it in parallel with a variable resistor (not a fanmate)
('+' on the psu side, '-' on the fan side). It works great and gives
my 4412FGL 2 seconds to speed up. Then the resisitor limits
the fan-voltage to 4V.

I just unsoldered a pin at the voltage regulator that is internally pulled-high. What pin depends on MB, CPU, and the desired voltage reduction. In my case it was a L6917B regulator from ST, on a A7V8X and a Palomino (at the time). I don't remember exactly what pin I unsoldered (I can check the next...

The second is that you can't undervolt an ASUS-board:(
Yes, you can but it requires some hardware-mod. I reduced the
'bias' voltage on mine so the CPU overvoltage range now is the
normal range, and the normal is the undervolting range.

Besides, it's very hard to pick the right fuse value, as it's a very fine line between what current is high but ok, and what is not. Fuses are usually there to protect the wiring and other components from burning up completely, not necessarily to protect them from damage at all. Third, fuses add som...

Hmm, weird!

The P4 3.4GHz S775 draws 3 times more power at idle
than the P4 3,4GHz EE . What's even worse: 30W extra at
full load, offering no or just marginal performance increase!

This must be the most sophisticated way of wasting power (and noise).

Our only hope is a bad test methodology.

I agree that it isn't really quiet enough at 5V, but throw away the
fanmate and lower the voltage to 3.5-4V (I'm guessing).
Big improvement! The CPU temp remains at an acceptable level
(55'C running prime and 25'C ambient for a +70W cpu)

After a day of usage I've discovered the PSU whines when cpu usage rises (which happens to occur when I autoscroll with the mouse wheel). Is this a normal symptom of a PSU gone wrong or what? It's most likely a CPU idle program (App, OS or BIOS) that causes your whine. I disabled CPU-idle as soon a...
