I've used them quite a few times.

I don't think there is any changeable resistors in a fan.

AFAIK its the size of the motor that decides the fan speed.

Hello A build like my old build might be a good option for you. Not much modding required. - Remove original PSU - Cut fan grill in back (not really required) - Remove drive bay to make room for huge heatsinks. A Shuttle strikes me as somewhat hard to mod for better cooling but im not sure if it can...

Its a very quiet cool-running drive.

Softmounting an ODD will result in a whole lot of reading-/writing-errors I belive.

Also as mentioned. The noise comes from the disc spinning.

This case looks pretty good.

I think the PSU would be able to run fanless if you block the side- and top-vents and use a 800RPM Slipstream in the front. It should provide enough air to cool the PSU.

I'm looking very much forward to SPCR's review of this case

Just try it out. (most) harddisks don't need much airflow to keep cool.

Have you tried flipping the 120mm fan and removing the 80mm?
That should work just as well as your current setup if you block air from going in/out from behind the front pnel.
