Well, the 3dB assumption is true only for fully constructive interference between two point sources. Think somewhere in mid-high education w'all have been taught about waves. With a CPU fan you are still going to want a case fan. I certainly agree. I was only suggesting that the use of a CPU fan would allow the case fan to run at a lower speed. Also, I'm not sure you'd really notice the additional noise of a quality case fan running at low RPM, over the noise of the CPU...

I have a EP45-DS3R. I am able to use Speedfan to control a 4-pin PWM fan on the CPU header. Software Control must be enabled for this header inside Speedfan. Speedfan is not able to control any of the other fan headers if a 3-pin fan is used. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems as though the 3 pin headers...

You might want to test your fans before you install the motherboard. I doubt that you'll be able to replace them without removing the motherboard. FYI, I thought that the Tricools running at Low speed were too loud, so I replaced all of them in my classic P180.
