Tanks a million for the detailed respons f_gx :D I really like the idea of semi-passive PSUs. They should be completly (or almost) silent when in idle or browsing the net and only spin up a tad when playing ! However, you have to mod it in some way, because the standard built-in fan turned even to i...

I don't believe the claim made by QuietPC. It does not compute. If it's true, then it's only because there was 100cfm through the case via other fans. I would be really surprised if this PSU survived longer than a few months in a serious high power gaming rig that's set up to run quietly . Ye...

I wonder why Nesteq/Greenerger have never submitted a sample to SPCR; we're like their perfect target market. I would like to see a review on NesteQ here on SPCR too !!! I've tried asking around here on the forum for usercomments from people who own this PSU but I've received no answers what so eve...

Do you mean sound absorption or vibration damping? Depending on MDF thickness, you probably won't need additional damping. I meant sound absorption. Every moving part (fans and harddrive-enclosures) will be thoroughly suspended by rubberstrings and foam somehow.... though I don't know exactly how y...

Best damping material ?
I'm going to build my own case out of mdf-boards. I'm going to cover every squareinch of the the interior in this case. Since the design of the case is divided in compartments I'm going to be needing quite much damping material... about 1.5 square-meters. The cost difference of different materials i...

Just found this thread (made a similiar question in a new thread) Anyway I'm bumping this thread in hope that anybody has anything to say about the NesteQ (ElanVital Greenerger). Is it as good as they claim on Tom's hardwarepage ? If it is, I would have to agree that this PSU really is the ho...

How silent is a NesteQ 450W ?
After browsing a while on semi-passive PSUs I've found that the NESTEQ NA 4501 ASM SILENT 450W should be one of the best semi-passive PSUs available. According to the review at Tom's hardwarepage the fan should not start at all even if you draw 250W or less for a long period of time  !!! (Not...

Thanks for the good replies to everyone :D Will I have to say I'm a bit sceptical about doing this kind of mod because of the potential danger... But since I'm "poweruser" (play demanding games, run CPU intensive tasks) and I usually have powerhungry components: any PSU, no matter how silent, will e...

"Fanless" PSU mod.
I'm planing of building my own wooden case. In some recent testing I've found that the noise of fan-vibration is a real big deal for slow spinning fans. However, suspending a slow 120mm fan using rubber strings can make it virtually inaudible. Anyway, this means I will have to remove the fan from th...

I doubt you'd have any significant gains (acoustically speaking) using birch instead of MDF. Certainly not enough to justify that price difference, assuming that price is an issue. Of course price is and issue :) Even though I will spend alot of money on PC-hardware and case materials I still want ...

Re: Yeah, wooden case...
Err....it depends. I myself ignored all the advice in my previous post and used solid softwood planks to build my case . Oh sorry. I did'nt realize it was you. Your wood-case article is the reason I decided to build my own wood-case to begin with :D However, a lot depends on your woodworking skills...

Re: Yeah, wooden case...
1. Don't use plywood. I repeat: don't use plywood! A normal piece of wood will do well, as will some semi-artifical materials. Plywood, even thick, is just horrible about transferring vibration. It depends on the plywood. Most pro audio speaker cabinets (you know, the kind you see hanging in audito...

If you're going to intentionally buy very hot components you should think about watercooling. I was thinking along the line of watercooling at the beginning but since I've never build a water-cooled system before it could get tricky (getting water pump quiet and so). The only really quiet one I've ...

Design advice for building a selfmade case.
Hello ! :) I'm thinking of building my own PC case, mainly by using plywood-boards. I'm using a 3D-model program for the design of my case so will probably be posting some pics here later when asking for design-feedback. This question however is more abstract and needs no pics to be asked :( I'm thi...
