How much of the pipe would be removed? If it's a large amount, then you might be better getting a used heatercore with the Nexus 120. If you're only removing half or so you might not have a problem.

You could replace it with a very slow 80mm fan and some kind of adaptor/duct if it's really that bad.

The capacitors in CRTs can hold most of their charge for 10 years, assuming you don't short the terminals. So even old monitors could be potenially lethal.

My Samsung 19" CRT whines when I switch to a lower resolution sometimes. I usually run it at 1600 by 1200 at 60hz, but low resolutions, particulary those used by Dos games, can make a very high pitched whine. Power cycling the monitor usually fixes it though.

I MAY have had too much AS3, but I doubt it. I try to conserve it as much as possible. When I look at the core there is little overflow on the sides, and the core is thinly covered. The sink itself is a clip on type, it can't be made tighter, so :? I don't think it's room temp either, normally with ...

But the thing is, I think that this kind of thing has happened to me before. I smear the paste around a bit, taking a fair amount with my finger, so that there is almost none left, and I get better temps. It's really disturbing, cause you get used to bad temps, and suddenly they're good. BTW I don't...

Did I lose 5C by removing some TIM?

On Wednesday my computer was acting strangely, so I turned it off while I was at work. When I got home the MB was (apparently) broken, so I switched it out, and put it in again after testing it. (I didn't reapply AS3, I just smoothed out what was still on the sink with my finger.) The MB gave me tro...

CPU: Also, I'm confused about the power needs of Athlon 64s as described in Athlon 64 for Quiet Power . On page 3 , idle consumption for the A64 2800 is listed as 77W (or 71W for CnQ) and seti consumption is listed as 115W). AMD, on the other hand, lists TDP numbers that are significantly higher th...

I've experienced the opposite. I had a 1600+ Pally that OCed to 1800MHz at 1.45v, with the stock AMD cooler and generic 266MHz DDR. After about 6 months, I was forced to go to a Volcano 7, but the CPU wouldn't go faster than 1600MHz @ 1.7v. It now runs at 1550MHz at 1.7v, and may need to go slower. ...

Socket 940, (Opteron, AthFX) S939, (Ath64) and S754 (Ath64) all use the same mounting clip and socket shape and size. If it works on one, it'll work on the others.

Open the lower front of the case, use what ever tools you have access to. Several rectangular slots would do fine. If you have done this already, you could try to cut holes in the side panel. The grey areas in the following image are where you should add extra holes. Focus primarily on the front are...

Where is fresh air being drawn into the case? It may be that the vents are too small or are obstructed. An option would be to use the 80mm fans as intake fans, and have the 120mm as an exaust fan. Some pics, or a good description would be useful. From what I have heard, having a negative pressure ca...

One thing to consider is that the wavelength of the sound produced by a 120mm fan is lower and more difficult to dampen than that of 2 80mm fans. I have found this from personal experience. I have two similarly loud fans; (when not dampened) a 120mm and an 80mm, and using the same amount of dampenin...

Water would work, prolly very well. You would need at least 1" of water on every side of the drive. Note that there would be the risk of a leak killing your drive. If you're putting something in front of the drives only, I would recommend useing a heavy block of lead/brass/copper/gold or a VERY well...

The reason that water dampens sound so well is that it is dense and heavy. Sound is made by vibration, and dense/heavy objects take more energy to vibrate at a given noise level. In theory, a 1"-3" brass or lead shell that completely enclosed the drive would lower the volume and pitch of the vibrati...

My recommendation is that you get eight 500W PSUs and use the information on the ProCooling Forums to make one. Here's the thread:

That would be your best bet for making something cheap. (The thread is 9 pages long though.)

Don't forget Ram, Opterons require registered memory. That's another $500 per GB, or $1000 per CPU. For 40 CPUs that's about $40,000 for each CPU to have 2 GBs. The total is now $80,000. Then you have to consider the harddrives. You will likely want SCSI for your high performance machine/s, though y...

I was looking at some internal pics of the Reserator, and it looks like the inlet is a compression barb. Could you put about 1' of hose in the barb to get better temperatures by moving the hot water at the top. The concept is that as it cools it sinks towards the pump.
