Thanks dCrypt, I settled on an XP120 because there's enough clearance in my Antec Fusion case for a fan on top (although I haven't put one on and it doesn't look like I'll need it). You're right - the "1' is an "i". Ooops. VesaM, I ran into the same problem with the XP120 - if you put it on with no ...

Hi there Gator, I have a Thermalright XP120 in an Antec Fusion case (which is I think the same as the NSK2400 except with a volume knob and display). There's plenty of height for a fan (although I haven't needed one). In my case the CPU is near the edge of the mobo where the fans are and clearance t...

Aris, I think you might be right. A hard mount probably would have done about the same. Avalanche, it came from Jaycar: http://www.jaycar.com.au/ The catalogue number is HH8573 - dimensions are 135mm x 105mm x about 35mm. I'm in Australia, so I don't know if they have US retailers but they do have a...

Thanks for the repy Bluefront - the plastic its resting on is heat transfer tape, so hopefully it gives me a bit more conductivity than ordinary plastic. I had mine suspended for a while, but found that when the drives were resting against something they got dramatically quieter. Odd eh?

A notebook HDD sandwich

Hi all, here's a verson of Mike's HDD sandwich for a notebook and with a heatsink to maybe keep things cooler. I found a heatsink which is about the same size as a 3.5" drive so it fits nicely in a standard drive bay. I went to my local metal shop and asked them to cut an aluminum plate to size. Dri...

Thanks, that helps - basically it sounds like it's worth doing something. I might just take the fan out and put a 120mm casefan in front of it instead. That's worth a go as a cheap option I reckon.

Antec Fusion PSU

Hi there all, I've got an Antec Fusion case which came with the stock SU430 PSU. Does anyone have an opinion about whether this is a quiet PSU compared to others? The PSU is by far the noisiest thing in the box - I've got an XP120 sink on a notebook CPU, fanless graphics and a notebook drive between...

Thanks Alfred,
You're probably right, I can't see that there would be any major physical difference between the LJ and LD that would account for noise so I probably just got a bad sample. It's like a freight train in there!

Samsung spinpoint HD400LJ and LD comparison

Hi there all, I recently tried out an HD400LD thinking it would be pretty much the same as the HD400LJ in the recommended HDD list. On the Samsung website the specs look pretty similar, but it is a whole lot louder than the other drives I'm using. Louder for sure than 2x Barracuda 7200 32GB. I have ...

Hi there Alex, I run a home music studio and have been looking for silence for a while. This experience might be useful to you. Just this morning I lined up three hard drives to have a listen. My PC came with 2 seagate barracudas (320GB), and I have two external drives, one with a Samsung HD400LD an...

Heatsinks and socket 478 or 479

Hi there all, I have recently bought a system for my home studio and I'd love to make the CPU a bit quieter. However, being pretty green I can't even work out what socket I've got to work out what will fit. The motherboard is a Gigabyte i-DNA. Model GA-81945GMMFY-RH. The user manual says socket 478 ...

Building a Home Studio PC

Hi Adam, I'd be super interested in how you go with your setup because I'm just about to look at a PC for my studio. I had a Carillon music system but sent it back because I didn't think it was all that quiet. It looks like ultimately you just have to do it yourself (which will be a nightmare for me...

I'm not a fluent German speaker, but my brother is so I'll go through it when he's next over. Hammersandwich, I'll post a link to some snapshots tomorrow. I'll also put up an MP3 so you can he...

Water cooling and fanless power supplies - from a newbie

Hi there, I'm a newbie with a specific question. Does using watercooling increase the likelihood that a fanless powersupply will cope? I've posted in the system advice forum (rather than watercooling) because of the following background. I recently bought a Carillon system which I found it pretty di...
