Thanks for pointing these CPUs out. Since except for the $140 for the AOpen itself and $5 for a pair of antennae , everything else I used was from spare parts, I also find it hard to go for one of the lower voltage CPUs. I'm somewhat tempted by the U1500, but wonder if at idle it would get much lowe...

It's too bad that the LV and ULV CPUs are so difficult to source at reasonable prices. I haven't looked recently but most of these processors in the past have been the kind that are soldered to the motherboard, not socket-style. Nice review and pretty similar to my experience (although since my nee...

I don't know about fanless, but I cool a Socket P P8400 with one of these: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/thhrchco1.html and a undervolted Nexus 92mm fan, and it runs very cool.

It's kinda funny, though. Thermal rating for the Core Solo is 31W. The maximum recommended thermal rating for the product is 27W. I wonder if that means I can try putting in a Core Duo with same thermal rating? According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_microprocessors TDP for Cor...

Mini-review
I received mine on Friday and set up a system today. As the previous post states, it does not come with a CPU (unfortunately misleading ad). However, the list of compatible processors includes the Core Solo T1300 of which there are many available on ebay for less than $10 shipped. Fortunately, I had...

Thanks very much, castar80. I tried sp34749.exe, and it worked in a funny kind of way. I tried installing it three times and each time I got a message saying that it wouldn't work with my OS. At that point, the Intel driver installation opened up. I went through the install, and at the end, 1280x768...

Thank you for your reply. I don't particularly care for Aero; I just want a fast silent system. Maybe I'll give seven a go after all to see how it feels. Thanks! I think my earlier post wasn't clear. My point is not that you can't run Aero, but there is no proper video driver at all. The most immed...

I don't think the SSD's are readily available anywhere. The last one I bought was from ebay, so you might check periodically there. I would not suggest upgrading to Windows 7. It's not that the system is sluggish, but there's only a plain VGA driver for video, either in Vista or 7. If you search the...

I just installed a Samsung 16gb ssd into my X1 but am having a few issues with it. Nothing serious, but did anybody else notice the long time for the bios to start? The bios progress bar gets to about 3/4 and then crawls slowly to 100%. This bios slow down is the only thing causing my boot-ups to t...

I think the board is dual channel so with 1x1gig and 1x2gig i would lose the dual channel feature. Microsoft lifted the minimum specs for windows 7 to 2gig, being able to use 3 gig would keep it above minimum requirements but i wonder if that would be worth giving up the dual channel feature. I'm c...

Unless it's changed on the new Mac Mini (which I doubt), the CPU is not soldered to the board. Just google "Intel Mac Mini take apart" or something similar, and you'll get pictures showing you how to do it.NeilBlanchard wrote:I thought that I heard that the CPU is soldered onto the motherboard in the Mac Mini?

So far I am very happy with the acoustics. I don't have any measurements to go by, but as far as I am concerned it is very quiet. In a relatively quiet room it is really hard to hear it. Sometimes you can hear the hard drive seeking, but you have to listen for it. All subjective of course... :) Tha...

Intel models (as of now): RAM upgrade requires motherboard to be removed from the case... RAM can be upgraded without removing the motherboard. It's really not that hard to open a Mini, and along with RAM, wireless adapter (not an issue with new one), HDD and optical drive are all easy upgrades. CP...

Apparently the CPU is soldered in place too, so you can't replace it. You can upgrade the hard drive and ram though, as described in this disassembly guide . Are you sure the CPU is soldered to the board? Having taken my older C2D Mini apart, this looks very similar to all the earlier Intel models,...

At least on U.S. Ebay searching for "ADD2" brings up a large number of unbundled ones. I can't, of course, attest to their compatibility with any particular motherboard.wywywywy wrote:the problem is I've never seen anywhere selling the ADD2 (not even the bay), except being bundled with certain retail boards

I picked up an 8GB Mini9 from the Dell Outlet with the 20% off coupon for a little over $250 and it's really very nice. It's very snappy and boots in a hurry. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, primarily to feel better running without a pagefile, and surprisingly it's even snappier (although it ran fine wit...

It is. The only problem is non-replaceable SSD drive. Dell mini is using proprietary SSD which is nothing more than a PCB with a bunch of memory chips. It is not a standard 2.5" SSD drive. At least with my 1000h I can upgrade to SSD if the SSD prices come down in a year or two. You can't do that wi...
