Was the drive particularly cold when you first started it? Not sure what the weather is like around you right now, but if they've been shipped in somewhat cold weather (50F or below) they are noiser and slower for the first little while until they re-adjust to ambient. But somebody with more knowled...

Try Air-in-a-can, a hairdryer on cold, etc. (Some people have also had success with a vacuum; I don't like that as much.) Might want to check your intake vents and any other heatsinks for dust as well while you're in there.

since you're using the SLK3000B, the fanless card might actually be an option; the intake grills on the side panel are right next to the VGA slot, and could help out in getting fresh air to the card. I would probably still go with a fanned option, like you, and put an after-market cooler on it. I ca...

I could see some of the bigger multi-channel amps pulling over 300W, like those 7-channel by 250-watt monsters that some people have in their home theaters. However, the PSU in a box like that is the only component producing a major amount of heat, unlike in a computer; it therefore has the luxury o...

good point, lorvut. This is especially true for developers like Valve and Id who plan on licensing their code/graphics engine out to other developers....the original Half-Life code was licensed for years before a better one came along.

BobDog , if you're running some of the wiring for this behind theater equipment, have you considered a power brick? Most HTPCs are pretty low powered, and (like the mac mini) can get away with a high-quality external AC/DC converter. You can always rig a 120-mm fan in place of the PSU to still comp...

I suggest you get some bungee cords and suspend them from the washing line. This will (eventually) solve a lot of these problems, but you will still hear murmurs of dissent. In contrast to most things more heat is better, so enclose them in a box with acrylic window at the top. You may also wish to...

Nah, no one has invented a proprietary way to transfer AC yet. As long as a particular cable can carry the correct amount of current without melting I don't think it matters. Mr.Shoes forgot about the underclocking in 2D mode bit that all the modern cards do now. Some even jack up the voltage a bit in 3D mode IIRC. In any case, getting back to the OPs problem its tough to say if its PSU heat related (the NX-4090 has average efficiency) or system/video card heat related....

I have the VM-101 on 6600GT and am satisfied with it. But the X800XL generates more heat than a 6600GT, almost like a 6800GT. The VM-101's cooling power depends on case airflow, which in turn depends on fan speed (and people on these forums run their fans as low as possible). I've seen a thread in ...
