Its hard to say, but I would be inclined to recommend a Thoroughbred B core. The manufacturing process for the last batches is excellent. These chips are great... I go with negative pressure. My FSP300 provides the only source of ventilation most of the time; during CPU intensive work, I set my rear 80mm case fan to 1% PWM, which is very low RPM, I don't know exactly how low though. I know this setup works great because my HD will actually get as much as 5*C ...

I think it would create a "short circuit" in the airflow...

You really have to watch for that. I know my HD gets about 5*C hotter with the side of the case off because no air is pulled over it.

Wow, that is quite an increase in your load temps! Have you tried going back to your stock speed and undervolting the CPU? My full load temps only go up about 4-5°C from idle while I'm at 1610Mhz and Vcore of 1.4V

Edit: .... I guess you don't have it to tweak anymore ... :(

The buzzing only comes from the flat panel speakers and not the center. The center is a traditional cube driver. Sorry man, that sounds like a problem that is intrinsic to the design of the speakers... :( If I were you I would just try to sell them to someone who won't care about the buzz... Edit: ...

My NEC FE770 makes only the faintest of buzzing sounds. It's so light it is not an issue at all for me as I have to turn everything off and listen for it to even know it's there.

That's really weird... my AC Super Silent Pro TC idles at such a low RPM that the sensors don't even read it. It's speed varies with load up to about 2000 RPM, but that's only when I peg the CPU with prime95 for a long time.

A hum coming from your speakers can be very difficult to pinpoint and solve. It can be due to the fact that your computer's power supply produces alot of noise because of it's switching design, and this noise propegates to the audio signal and results in a "hum"... or it can be due to a ground loop....

One more vote for Evercase 4252. Just got mine with the $32 Fortron 120mm fanned PSU. It's not the absolute toughest case out there, but it has great airflow and does better than basically any other case you will find for the money. It's pretty easy to tweak for better airflow too.

wsc, you don't mean like the regular dell setup of a case fan directly next to the HS do you? would that be considered passive? My old Dell ran like that. After it fried twice they added a duct or something and it stayed pretty cool. It fried twice brand new and I've never over volted/over clocked ...

It's hard to say how much airflow they have, I only got to look at them opened up for a very few minutes. I believe they have one case fan + the PSU fan, and that's it.

I thought I would mention that at work, we have a bunch of HP P3 700 boxes, all passively cooled right from the factory. You do have to watch out for dust accumulation on the HS, it tends to hurt the heat dissipation and caused one mobo to eventually fail.

How neatly have you folded your IDE cables?

Have you looked into getting a power supply with a 120mm fan?

What sort of fans are you using? You can always get higher quality ones that have less bearning noise and better blade design.

I like the creativity in cutting off the PSU's outer casing, but I think this modification may actually be detrimental to the cooling and therefore lifespan of the PSU. I believe with no casing, air will be drawn directly to the PSU exhaust fan instead of over the PSU's components. Please update us ...
