Hot Northbridge

Post by ArtCubed » Wed Feb 04, 2004 10:51 am

The center of the top of my northbridge heatsink on the P4 is getting HOT - 54 C. Should I do something about this, or is this normal?

Unless your PC is experiencing crashes or you're getting unexplained errors, I wouldn't worry about. Otherwise, just get a bigger northbridge heatsink - Zalman sell one for about $8

The northbridge chip is usually rated for 99*C, so 54*C is not hot.
A margin of 45*C is like if you have a P4 CPU that gets 30*C.

54°C isn't close to being too hot for a P4 NB. I've seen 90-100°C numbers published by Intel (but I don't remember the exact number). You can find it if you have enough patience and luck to browse Intel's site.

What are you using to get theat temperature?

I used one of those CD-bay-mounting temp sensor things. I'm definately going to consider buying one of the zalman northbridge heatsinks tho...

integrated vid

I see in your sig that you are running integrated video. I noticed that the northbridge gets considerably hotter in a system with integrated video (P4B533-VML, Aopen AX63Pro, Gigabyte-845GEsomething, and Intel845GE-something).

I wouldn't worry about it too much.
