1ghz suggestions

Post by p_UK » Fri Mar 19, 2004 4:44 am

Hello. I've been away from this board for a while having settled on my fanless solutions of using EPIA boards.

However, I have started to use my main computer for photoshop editing and it is not fast enough.

I'm looking for something that would be of the performance of a 1ghz P4 class machine. It needs to be silent but the size of the thing doesn't matter. I don't bother to put my machines in cases and they are strewn on the floor.

Anyone have suggestions? Cheap UK prices preferred.

look for a >1GHz C3 or if you want more performance a tualatin. I dunno if that'd be fast enough for video editing but a 1.4GHz PIII is just less than a 2.0GHz PIV and a 1GHz C3 is just more than a 667PIII so a 1.1C3 should be sufficient according to those numbers.

Taking into account that I just pulled these numbers out my arse and I'm probably misstating something, play it safe with a 1.3 or 1.4 C3 or play it really safe with a Tualatin.

Why not go with a 2.8Ghz 800MHz PIV? Video editing is big stuff, right?

big heat producer... probably just less than 25W

EDIT: actually, read the reviews. People claim it's only 800MHz...

Well, i own 1.2Ghz VIA C3 fanless machine (see there: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=9704 ) and it's fast enought for anything i need my application server
Image editing into Photoshop is a CPU and memory hungry thing, make first sure, that you have at least 1Gby ram and Photoshop is set to use at least 80% of it - then complain about speed, not before

Second point - P4 is crappy cpu, when come to performace/cycles ratio. Even PIII spank it's ass hard on same clock, so underclocking P4 to 1Ghz for performace and fanless solution is far from reasonable.
Go with underclocked/volted Duron 1400 to 1Ghz with voltage set to 1.1V and it will work fanless
Or go with 3Ghz P4 into the big fanless Zalman case, if you got some spare bucks

thanks for the replies so far. you're right about the photoshop being a memory hog. though i am cpu constrained too. 600mhz of VIA EDEN just isn't very fast ;)

anyone used this before:

http://www.dabs.com/uk/templates/Channe ... klinx=30WY

if this works, i can use a p4 2.8 which will be fast enough for me. any recommendations on motherboards. i used to be up to date with the technology but it has all passed me by now.

abit vt7 looks full featured. does dual ddr ram work with normal ddr ram? i think i'll need 1gb or 2gb.

also, will the p4 motherboard need the special p4 power connector? i only have a fanless oldstyle atx psu. any recommendations for fanless p4 psu's or p4 psus that can work with the fan removed?

Silentmaxx making nice fanless PSUs
The Heatlane Zen cooler was discussed there:
http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=11033
...and from the reviews is not very positive, tough :?
At least the first review, where even 2.53Ghz P4 crashing every 5min on full load, well... Dunno how intense your work it is, but im somewhat worried - make sure you case have a VERY nice ariflow - could be fanless, just open its back, bottom and such, like me:

...and keep us posted with the Heatlane Zan cooler results

Well, you are welcome.
Definitively try it and share your experiences, please

And yes, fanless coolers are rare. Frankly, i don't know about others, you do? Show some examples, please, perhaps even in the correct tread? :?:
