Barton XP-M vs. XP

Post by kogi » Sat Apr 03, 2004 7:39 pm

After plonking down money for an XP-M. I got a bit bored waiting for it to come in the mail ( US -> Aust). I decided to do a bit of testing on my stock barton 2500+

My Undervolting results were very-very similar to the hexus.net review on the XP-M.

LOCKED aqxfa 0335
1833MHz 1.45v Pass
1900MHz 1.45v Pass
2000MHz 1.45v Pass
2100MHz 1.45v Pass
2200MHz 1.55v Pass

All prime stable and temps below 50 on an SLK-800 and L1a

Is anyone getting the same results?
It looks like if you want a quiet puter instead of massive overclocks, you don't need to spend the extra on an XP-M

The XP-M is good because there is assurance that the chip will run at 1.45v. My 2500+ will not boot if it is 0.25v under stock voltage.

With all CPU purchases there is the luck of the draw. You may get a great overclocker/undervolter, you may not. The XP-M has a smaller, more valueable deck from which the cards are drawn.

Remember that M-bartons roll off the same "assembly line" as regular Bartons, they are just samples that passed the more stringent post-production testing.

What you're paying for is the guarantee that they will run at 1.45v (and perhaps lower) Some regular Bartons will as well, but your mileage will most definitely vary.

My M-Barton 2500 runs merrily along at 1.25 volts, at stock speed. Whether you could get a Barton would do that is probably not likely.
