SilentTek activation

Post by Jon12345 » Wed Apr 14, 2004 6:49 am

How do I activate the SilentTek feature on my AOpen motherboard? Do I just go into the bios and do it?

If so, how then do I get to see the cool looking tabbed software control panel? Surely that is not in the bios too?

Regards,

Jon

SilentTek is a utility that should be available on the CD-ROM that accompanied your AOpen motherboard. Just install this utility and you should be set. After the utility is installed, it shows up as an entry in your Start>Programs list. Click on that entry and the Control Panel appears.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! Downloaded it and installed it. When I activated it, my CPU fan (I think) practically turned itself off. But when I was monitoring the CPU temp for a couple of minutes, it did not seem to rise.

This got me thinking. What if it is not picking up the CPU temp somehow? Would it melt my CPU or would something else happen first so I could prevent it?

Are there some kind of sensors you have to add to the CPU or will it always work?

That's a good sign. I am planning on an upgrade and I'm going to use an AOpen board with SilentTek and a Thermalright SLK947U cooler with my 80mm NMB fan on an AMD XP2800+. What does your motherboard say the temperature of the processor is? I think you can set it somewhere in BIOS to shut down the computer if an overtemperature event occurs. Your first sign will be that the computer will completely freeze if you really are overheating. If not, welcome to the world of silence!

But will I see the CPU temp rise by say 5 degrees over a couple of minutes when the fan is not working? Or would it take an hour?

How quickly the CPU temp rises will be determined by airflow, cpu utilization, cpu voltage, heatsink efficiency, room air temperature, other in-case components and other factors.

The simplest approach at this point would be for you to run Prime 95 or CPU Burn, available here:

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
http://users.ev1.net/~redelm/

These programs will heavily load the cpu. While running one of these "torture testing" programs, sit there and watch the SilentTek temperatures monitor. Within a few minutes, your cpu temps should rise and your fans should speed up. Once convinced that all is going well (or badly), immediately exit the program. Do not walk off and leave these programs running unattended if you are not sure that your fans are running\properly controlled.
