silencing a TIVO

Post by jerryk » Sat Sep 18, 2004 7:19 am

Hi,

Has anyone succeded in silencing a Tivo? If the TV is off and I an reading in the room I can hear the fans. This is very annoying.

BTW, my unit is upgraded with an additional drive, but I used a Barracuda V. The noise is from the fans, not the drives.

This has been discussed a little bit before...

Maybe look into undervolting, decoupling and failing that replacing the fan (it will probably be 60 or 80mm depending on the tivo model). Also you could try removing the fan grill if it's restrictive.

depends on which version tivo you have. i have a series 2 standalone and i pretty much did just what this guy did http://homepage.mac.com/snsimon/photo/TiVo/

but i used an 80mm panaflo and added a zalman fanmate so i could dial it down. i watched the temps for a while to make sure it was staying at the same temps as before. pretty much can't hear it all now. my hard drive (the stock one) was actually getting louder (it was a western digital) so i replaced it with a single samsung. so when you take it apart to mod it, just make sure both your drives are quiet enough once you sort out the fan issue.

yeah, this is sort of an ugly mod with the adapter hanging out the back, but you really never see it.
