Using only Via Eden 600mhz

Working purely on heat convection. Hot air exhausted through top panel, draws cool air through bottom panel, aided by being elevated.

He is doing a lot to run the 600MHz CPU. You don't need to do anything special to make the 600MHz version run with convection cooling only.
Trodas managed to make the 1200MHz VIA C3 run with convection cooling only, but he did do some work. There is a good thread here at SPCR about that build.

It's kind of like the Power Mac G4 Cube. Of course, it had an external power supply, but that was fanless as well. The G4 Cube had its share of problems, but it showed that convection cooling could be made to work rather well. If you remember, directly below the top vent was a large processor heatsink whose fins were as long as the vent was wide. That caused a convection current to form, which drew air through the rest of the case. This could be a very interesting approach. Of course, you'd have to relocate the power supply. Perhaps a case could be devloped where the PSU was mounted at the ottom and had a fan blowing in, and then the ATX motherboard would still be positioned normally but there would be this massive heatsink like the Heatlane Zen or whatever right below a big hole at the top of the case. It might be an interesting exercise to try and cool a Pentium M convectively.
