Not exciting enough to get me to browse over to Tom's again, unfortunately.

It was, unsurprisingly, tried by one of the good folk here many years ago - your name in lights again, Rusty!

First the Wall Street Journal, and now THG...

At least I (and the half dozen people online that I copied the idea from) were smart enough to use Mineral Oil, instead of vegetable oil which will be a cloudy, stinking, rancid mess after a month of running at 40°C temps.

Yah... when you have oil all over, it can be quite a mess to clean up, much like Charlie's Lian Li...

THG fails again - everyone knows you use a Pentium D to cook with...

Why is that, out of curiosity? Does the vegetable oil undergo saponification (hydrolysis of the esters in vegetable oil)? Where does the alkaline substance come from in the case of the submerged PC?

From THG's "Overclocking To 5GHz Using Liquid Nitrogen" (!!!) article:
At full load, taking into account a maximum CPU heat dissipation of just under 175 watts,
175 watts!!!!! Some people's whole computers don't use that much under load (including mine)!

No - all unsaturated fats (like vegetable oil) attract nasty particles to attack those double bonds, such as sulfur. These make it rancid and smelly. I learned this by watching Good Eats :D
