VIA KT266/KT266A Chipset cooling hack

Post by quokked » Mon Feb 03, 2003 6:02 am

http://www.ocmodshop.com/default.aspx?a=125 this is a hack so that the kt266/kt266a chipsets will send a HALT command to the CPU, very useful guide here for you ppl with this chipset on your boards, pushing a HALT command to your CPU usually cools it down by a BIG margin unless your loading your CPU with something like RC-5 or Folding@home good luck :)

Quokked, I just read this artlicle, and it looks legit, so I am going to give it a whirl, and report on my findings...

Thanks for the heads up... sorry for the delay in reading it ;)

Did you check the latest bios. I checked mine on MSI KT333. Halt command is included in power managment section. Don't know about KT266 though.

ok on my kT266 (Asus A7v-266 bios rev 1010)

I had to change register 95 from 18 to 1A
and register 92 from 79 to F9

Heavy IDE is definitely slower... cpu has cooled a couple of degrees. I will leave it over night and do a temp read in the morning

Idle temps dropped 3 degrees on my config... not dramatic.

Other problems included USB mouse failure requiring reboot.
slow ide & network.

I have reversed the change, but an interesting experiment none the less.
