Heatsink question/idea

Post by lethul » Mon May 26, 2008 2:12 pm

Why does not direct touch HS look like this?

lets call it a fatpipe, that is in contact with the entire cpu?

I just realise that making it wider towards the top might not be a good idea. But still, my main thought is exemplified here!

Why not? Pressure possibley - there's usually a low pressure in a heat pipe, it would require thick-ish copper (i.e. more expensive/less profit) to prevent a single pipe distorting across a flat surface.

There are examples of flat heatpipes around (e.g. http://www.norenproducts.com/Heat_Pipes ... tml#anchor), although these are usually arranged as a number of tubes in cross section (often made of extruded aluminium)

Scythe have tried it. There is a SPCR review of their approach. It did pretty good.
