Is my memory bad??

Post by drfinalfantasy » Mon Aug 25, 2003 7:21 am

I have the corsair 3200 XMS 512 meg and for some reason I can't seem to get my system stable at 200 mhz bus speed. I can get into windows but it will eventually give me the blue scree, general protection faults and other....is that due to my memory??? my system temps are fine !!! arrrrg irritating!

you can test your memory with memtest86 I think.
It makes a bootable disk and then it'll start testing your memory for errors.
I don't know if this can help you.
you can find it here

Yuo should definitely run Memtest86 to check your RAM. Let it run the basic set of tests for a few hours (it will keep looping over and over till you stop it) and if you get no errors then run the full series of tests for a while.

If you get errors and have multiple sticks of RAM, pull out one stick and just test one stick at a time to find the bad stick.

If you do get errors you can always try removing and reinserting each stick a few times to make sure the contacts are clean and to make sure your RAM is seated good.

A little extra Vdimm may help too. Have you tried that yet?

If worse comes to worse at least you can rest easy knowing that Corair has excellent customer service and will do what it takes to get you some good RAM. You do have to follow the procedure that's listed in their forums though.

Update your BIOS! ;)

My ASUS P4P800 Deluxe wouldn't accept the two 512MB Corsair PC3200 XMS sticks I bought. Not at the same time, at least. MemTest86 would give a lot of errors on the second module, never the first, even though I switched them around. There were no errors when using only one stick.

After a BIOS update, everything worked, and MemTest86 doesn't produce any errors at all.

How old is the RAM? Did you purchase it from a viable vendor?

Yeah, I like NewEgg...

Is it too old to return?

I guess I could but that would be a pain. I guess I can live with it at 333 :? ...sigh

Is your FSB @ 333?

If so, then you WANT to run your ram @ 333 to remove the bottleneck.

Hell, it probably will run faster if your FSB is 333.

Let me reiterate: You need to check your RAM to see if it's stable before you blindly start blaming it for your problems. Look at my post from 24hrs ago. Test your RAM, then you'll have somewhere to start from instead of just guessing.

I just ran the tests. It seems that my ram is fine at my 333 bus speed. Perhpas it is the processor. It passed allmemtest tests.

Dude, run your FSB and RAM @ 333 and in dual channel mode for most efficieny and speed.

Everyone in the world who has a dual channel board with AMD CPUs can support this idea.

I think I'll do that. I don't think the performance difference makes up for the added heat / wear and tear.

Thanks everyone

I'll second POLIST8's suggestion. It really is a much better way to go, and you already know your RAM is up to it.

Thanks Ralf.

Feels like Sunny SoCal in Madison lately...

90s for about 2 weeks in a row with minimal rain. Ugh.

Can't wait for the -30F this winter...

May not be a winter. Think "global warming". You my have beachfront property up there if the glaciers start melting. :)

Yeah, last winter was cold for a month or so, but we really are beginning to have Summer until October, and Winter from Nov. - March...

Sucks.
