LCD Monitor Advice

Hi,
Want to free up some desk space, and now that LCD monitors response time, contrast ratios, etc, are good enough to compete with CRT's, I'm in the market to buy one.
I notice that some LCD's come with the power adapter built in, this makes them a little bulkier, and some use external power adapters, which gives the advantage of making them slimmer. What would be the best type to go for, and why?

In terms of models I'm looking at the NEC 1760NX & Hercules Prophetview 920 Pro, both look excellent.

Hello:

I prefer the self-contained models. I have the NEC LCD-1760V (analog only version) and it is pretty good. The only weak point is at the dark end of the color spectrum, it gets too dark too quickly.

Another model that you might want to consider is the Samsung 173T, which is similar to the 173B that Mike C. reviewed, but it has a DVI input, no speakers (a good thing!), and the thinnest bezel you will find. It also has a height adjustment and a pivot -- which is an excellent thing! And a 700:1 contrast ratio-- wow! It's power supply is built in and it comes *with* a wall mounting bracket... [/drool]

I have the 19" version of that Samsung, it is a great LCD panel.. with all the usual LCD caveats. Basically if you are a gamer or a picky graphics artist, wait another year and a half. Everyone else dive right in.

Samsung 172t: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.a ... ption=172t

This one is great, I'm probably going to get one. Notice that this and the other Samsung mentioned have 25ms response time. People talk about ghosting but I'm sure with these high quality monitors on DVI that there is no problem.

Hah! A year and a half ago when I got my 1900FP people were saying the exact same thing: "if you game, wait another year, there'll be a new genration of 16ms LCDs coming out that will be awesome for gaming". I couldn't wait and bought my LCD anyway and here we are, still waiting. :)

25ms is optimistic black-to-white, and doesn't cover the far more common grey-to-grey transitions which take substantially longer. Check Dan's Data for LCD articles that cover this in more detail.

Panel times need to get to 10ms or under before "ghosting" will be gone. Probably won't matter unless you are a gamer, though. If all you do is 2D Windows stuff, then you're fine.

I don't know what response time my 5 year old Gatway 15" (DFP) LCD gets but I get no ghosting in Quake 3 when I jerk my guy around really fast while looking at a bright object. I just tried it to be sure. I just put in Snatch and tried to see some DVD ghosting and didn't see it. I am a gamer and I don't see ghosting. Does it have anything to do with the fact that it's a DFP, maybe it's a bit different. I can't find any specs on it, but it is going for less than $200 now :)

Holy Crap, I just read that the response time is 50ms, geez.

What are you people expecting exactly? LOL and I was contemplating getting a 16ms over the 172T. I have played so much Quake with this monitor.

That stand is absolutely great! As You can see in the here, the stand is really flexible, and makes it possible to use the screen like it has no stand at all (see the second pic). Very good feature from ergonomic standpoint.

I'm not yet experienced enough to say if the display part is as good as the stand is... Only seen a few LCDs "live", and not next to each other. 172T is bit old when compared to newer LCDs.

I've got an LG L1710B myself. The picture on the site is wrong - it looks like this.

There are a few variations of this monitor - with the same model number but with different panels. The 16ms version would be the best to get. The one I bought was advertised as 16ms but I've got no way to check =/

Anyway, the image quality is good and it's bright. Playing games isn't as good as on my 19" CRT. Textures blur and smear when turning quickly in a fps. It's not too drastic though - I play wolfenstein ET and Warcraft 3 without it bothering me much. In Windows click scrolling a web page will make text smear like wet paint and the same with dragging windows round. It takes a bit of getting used to after using a CRT.

The stands isn't very adjustable but it's positioned ok on my desk. The power supply is built into the unit.

I got mine for £300 ex VAT from scan, or you can get it for the same price from overclockers. It comes with a DVI cable.

The Samsung 172X looks nice and should be coming out soon if you can find it somewhere.

I have 2 LG 563LE LCD's and use them for gaming aswell as my normal work.

I have no problems with them what so ever... but a better response time would be good.

I recommend samsung to my friends as in Australia they have a ZERO PIXEL DEFECT guarantee for the frist month. If you have a fault on delivery you can return it to SAMSUNG for a replacement so you don't have to argue with the retailer.

If you can's get a screen with a zero defect at purchase warranty, try and buy an LCD off the floor of a shop, so you can confirm that all pixels are good before you fork over cash.

SONOVA, my session timed out looking at articles  and I lost my friggin post, I'll try to recreate it:

Yes the stand is outstanding. I have seen those pictures and many others :) The display is reviewed favorably as well. The wall mount appears to be quick, "push it on". If possible, picking up the monitor and sticking it on the wall easily would be great for watching movies. Also I like the ability to switch between the 2 inputs since I have 2 computers I could hook them both to it and use the one monitor. I don't think it is very old. It is still on Samsung's site while the 19inchers and the 'N's are gone but still in stores. Also, searching for 17inch LCD DVI 16ms response time doesn't bring up many candidates.

I still don't understand people talking about ghosting etc. when I'm using this 50ms response time LCD and don't notice any of that. I use CRTs quite a bit so I'd be able to tell the difference. The differences I see are a sharper display (especially text) on my LCD and it's much easier on the eyes. There is no streaking of scrolled text or any ghosting in Quake3. Does anybody have any ideas? Maybe they changed the standards or how they're measured?

edz: Yes, the 172x looks nice but I'm sure it will cost more being newer. Could you use the serial number to tell if yours a 16ms one? That stinks, there has to be some way to tell.

I haven't heard of that zero pixel defect guarantee, maybe it's just in AUS. I've heard that Samsung isn't very good with that kind of thing.

In summary, I guess my requirements are: 17inch LCD w/ DVI, minimal ghosting etc., no speakers, and of course cost effectiveness.
