My tribute to SPCR!

Post by chylld » Mon Dec 15, 2003 8:56 pm

A quick story: before this (much quieter) computer, I used a Shuttle SN45G. Before that was a plain old beige AOpen H600A. The noise level of the AOpen was tolerable, I was able to do work etc etc. But then I got my brand new Shuttle, and the noise was so great that I simply could not sit myself down at the computer to do any serious work.

After finding SPCR I learnt a lot about silent computing and using the information and opinions from this site, I was able to build up my current system which is much, much quieter. Many of you measure your success in terms of dBA, cfms, temps and/or clock speeds, however I measure my success in terms of how much more productive I am.

Since the arrival of my new computer, I've been able to get back to work making some 3D models, and I thought that it would be appropriate to model something that resembles silent computing. For the past 2 days I've been hacking away at what you see below, I hope you all like it:

No prizes for guessing what it is :) It's by no means perfect, but it is something, and that it is something really does mean something.

Again, thanks to all. Silent Computing really can be more than just an obsession!

Nice...

How about a 3D model of MikeC next? :-)

Thanks for the comments guys :)

I used a scanner to capture the label, but I used a ruler for everything else. (The scanner refused to pick up the frame and stuff because it's all black.)

lenny: I've yet to do a 3D model of a human - it's an incredibly difficult thing to do. Then again, if my new silent pc lets me do this, then when this panaflo (the basis for the above model) goes into the PSU to quiet it further, maybe it'll let me model mikeC :)

all i need is some reference pics...

I took it for a photo at first, but scrutinizing the detail determined to find something wrong...
Ah, there it is the connector on the end of the wire has a small glitch.
The bare metal on the backside should be the same length...

Awfully well done man!
Do you do this just for fun or do you do something similar for a living?

For the reference pics of MikeC (heheheh, Mike), you can check him out in all of his heavenly silent glory in a past issue of PCWorld (it was on do-it-yourself, easy/improvement stuff for PCs)...anyone know the issue (of course, if MikeC REALLY doesnt want a 3D model, then nevermind :D )?

Great job! I salute you man, it really looks like a photo. But what Panaflo model is it supposed to be?

p/s: Which reminds me, the other day I was asking about a symbol or logo for silent computing. Anyone found a suitable one yet?
p/s/s: My 100th post!

Chylld, will you be doing a movie à la Toy Story, where Panaflos come to life when you are not watching your PC and fight the evil Papst fans ? ;)

Great job by the way.

Dangit, Papst fans aren't evil, they're just misunderstood! ;)

And yes, the rendering is excellent.

Spectacular work! I originally blew past it with just a quick glance thinking, "OK the guy bought a PanaFlo and took a professional-grade photo of it, big deal." Then I read more closely and looked at it again. The "imperfection" of the label is what threw me, I think. Very well done. What did you use for modeling?

rofl! It's hard to believe how complimentary you guys are. Thanks all again for the comments:

silvervarg: the silver bits on the connector are actually the same length, just the renderer stuffed up (dunno why). I don't do this for a living (yet) but I hope to; atm i'm a software engineering undergraduate.

engseng: I hinted before that it was going into my sl350s psu, so you should be able to deduce which model it is!

kostik: I intend to animate this model and give it life. somehow. the model is quite complex, i'm not sure if it'll distort properly.

sbabb: the "imperfection" of the label is another stuffup by the renderer. it was all done in Maya. (with mental ray as the renderer)

I completely misread the very bottom of the article as:

"Next Page: Look at Least as Cool as Mike"...

If only! :D

Amazing! What gave it away for me was the colour of the cables, they are too light :)
