My attempt...

Post by GenghiS_KhaN » Thu Feb 03, 2005 6:12 am

Hi,

I've been here before, something like a year ago but now I've returned. :)

First I had the following setup, bought it with the idea of having a silent PC.

Old setup:
  • - Chieftec cs601
    - 4 80mm papst at 5v (I forgot the code)
    - zalman zm400a psu
    - Abit nf7s rev2 with passive NB by Zalman
    - 2500+Barton at 1.425V
    - SLK900U
    - Papst 92mm at 7v, (5is too low, I tried it but temps rise too fast)
    - Seagate 7200.7
    - Sapphire 9700pro with vga silencer rev1
But after a while my PSU started making the clicking noise that a lot of people had. So I found a shop where they sell the Nexus nx3000. I'm very happy with it. I also got annoyed by the Seagate noise when the drive is seeking. So I ordered a Samsung spinpoint but I'm still waiting for it to arrive...

But a week ago I broke my left ellbow and now I'm spending more time at home and spending less money on going out. I got annoyed by the noise my computer made so I started looking for something new.

I found a good deal on the Antec 3700AMB and immediately bought it. I also found someone who sold his Panaflo 12G12L. So i bought it.
Now everything is installed. The Panaflo looks exactly like the OEM panaflos that were discussed here before. But it doesnt have the 'h' in the productname. At 12v I can here the air woosh and a the motor. So I lowered it to 5v but I was not yet satisfied. I added an old Volcano 7 speed regulator and now its at 3-4V I guess. If i lower it more it wont start.

Temps:
Idle case 26, cpu 32, hd 48
after benchmark case 35, cpu 47, hd 50-52

But after the case change I started hearing the PSU better, its only air noise but I can here it :(. It became the loudest component.
Now I'm thinking of installing some noise blocking foam. I can get it for 8.75€/m² at a local store. It looks like it would work well. Normally it's used for noise-isolating buildings.
The HD is lying on some foam to quieten it a bit.

Current setup:
  • - Antec 3700AMB
    - Panaflo 12g12l at 4v
    - Nexus NX3000
    - Abit nf7s rev2 with passive NB by Zalman
    - 2500+Barton at 1.425V
    - SLK900U
    - Papst 92mm at 7v
    - Seagate 7200.7 (spintpoint on the way)
    - Sapphire 9700pro with vga silencer rev1 on low

Any advice on the PSU? (I'm not buying a new one :p)
And what about the foam? Should I go for it? I'm not sure because its the PSU that is making the noise.
Any more ideas?

edit: added pics
I need to do something about the cable mess too but Ill wait till Ive decided about the foam

cut out that rear grill, you'll cut down on the air-woosh noise, and probably be able to up the exhaust fan to 7v and still be silent.

yeah i'm thinking about doing that. But the problem is that i can hear the motor of the panaflo spin, but i'll try it.

Would it be a good idea to lower the PSU fan speed to say, something like 10v? Or will it overheat to easily? Anyone with experience with this psu?

yeah I should really work on the cables :)

psu fan is just standard
cpu fan is lowered to 7v using the 7v trick (red and yellow wire)
the rear exhaust fan is at 5v using the trick and lowered some more by using an old volcano7+ switch i had lying around...
