New rig, built for gaming, had to tweak for silence.

Hi, new user, decided to post some of the rigs i've made and tweaked these past weeks.

i basically made 2 computers one for myself and one for my GF, we play a mmo, multiplayer online game no, not wow, eq2(no wow vs everything else flames plz) as such we play high end(we are the uber guild on our server for those asking). So we needed powerful machines if we're gonna keep on playing, decided to upgrade.

her's is configured a bit like mine, but i'll just post mine first

amd x2 1.9, oc'd to 2.8(40c idle, 51load)
2gigs 4-4-4-12 patriot
asus msn2 570
8800gts
some ultra x case i got free after rebate, free shipping too(yes i recieved the rebate)
some ultra x pws i got free after rebate(got that rebate too)
-old sb xlive
-old dvdr drive that won't burn but will still read(my other computer will handle the burning duties)
-old wd 250 sata
cooling
3yate loon 120mm (the sl kind?)
1 artic cooling 80mm
1 gemini ii cooler(it was cheap w/ a rebate 18bucks it looked so huge i had to take the deal)

So i basically put everything together, then it got noisy, i mean wow(for cooling i had an old sunon 80mm front, 120antec something back, and old artic cooler freezer 64pro[this one was nice and quite])

long story short, i suspended the drive w/ mcmaster bungee cords, then i thought these cords are cool, why don't i just tie the fans with them too.(it's not too aestically pleasing if you see the pics, but works well) i got the arctic cooling 80mm and the 3 yate loons,(it was a sale again free shipping 3bucks each) i took the fan out of the pws and put bungee cord on that too. taped up some holes, wired it nice. and i dremel'd out the cage drive(was just 6 solder points). also found 2$ rubber feet at radio shack

i'm surprised the fans aren't blurry as i took the pic while the machine was on, old nikon. i plan to clean up the cpu fan leads, after i lap the cpu/heatsink.

here's the side door, i took out theplastic vent on the side.

it's pretty quiet now, it runs
40idle, 51load while playing eq2
gpu never changes.

b4 it was a wind tunnel now i hear a slight humm and minor hd noise when it works hard(like loading a game zone).

If you think your PC is noisy, the first thing to do is replace/remove the sunon 80mm. I found the sunon 80mm so noisy, just can't stand it.

yea that 80mm sunnon's been replaced w/ a 80mm artic cooling, tho i think i'll mod the case again and dremel out the space to fit in another 120 yate loon, since i already took out the drive cage area.

Too many fans. That CPU could work fine with a 1-fan heatsink, probably even fanless if you get good airflow within the case. You can try to disconnect the 2 CPU fans and stress the CPU watching the temps. That monster of a CPU cooler may do the job. If this does not work, those fans could be undervolted with a fan controller.

i agree, that cpu cooler is fucking huge. WTF?!?!

the cpu fans almost never turn on, i have everything controlled w/ speedfan now atm, and it runs at 45c idle (web browsing, minor office work) w/ only the ps fan on.

this monster of a heatsink(gemini ii, i wouldn't even buy it , if it wasn't on special w/ a big rebate) performs pretty bad imo.

how would it be too many fans? if at most it has 1 fan too many in an optimal flow setup and even then it barely turns on.

this is still a work/gaming pc as well, and when i need the fans on they turn on, usually when a game loads, it's pretty quiet for a 33% overclock as well.

Well, if they are off, then I'll eat my words. You don't have too many fans in there  . Nice job!.

update, lapped HS and proc, idle is now 33c load is still 51c but wow lapping dropped idle temps by 7c is pretty huge, it's still oc'd btw, 33% from 1.9 to 2.9, fans never turn on =D

bought 10$ svc lapping kit btw, w/ little glass plate free shipping came in 2days not bad.

gonna lap 8800gts heatsink next(is it possible to lap the 8800gts gpu? or don't bother?)

Idle temps with the same ambient temperature? From a neutral perspective, the one thing most people miss when giving temperature readouts is that ambient plays a huge role in cpu temps.

^- yea only my cpu temp changed.

For a cleaner look, you could replace the fan bungee cords with velcro dots or squares.
