Quiet Gaming HTPC at 16 Litres

Post by Smanci » Wed Mar 09, 2016 7:07 am

08/2018 Update

The system has greatly evolved from its original form, and I'm sure sharing it is still useful especially for folks interested in quiet SFF computing... It's gotten beefier yet quieter, thanks to simply putting some more heatsink in it. One can without a doubt call it SPCR-quiet and probably could be made nearly SPCR-silent by making some temperature-related compromises.

Will write more when I have the time.

What did you use to do the stress testing for the temperatures? By the way, if something causes the GPU to throttle then it won't actually drop the temp realistically. It'll throttle on and off so fast that it will just bounce off the temperature limiter repeatedly.

There could be some use of bigger heatsinks in there if you ever feel the need to bring temperatures lower for less noise.

Oh, forgot to mention. Rendered a 3D model and ran Unigine Heaven 4.0 simultaneously, some GTA V and Battlefield 4, that type of use.
I am not completely sure whether it would lower the temperature but hitting power limit in Furmark causes massive drop in core voltage and clocks, something that doesn't happen in anything else.

I've been eying Thermaright Mahco but it's a huge chunk of metal and I'd have to run it passive. Might give it a try.

Thanks for sharing.
As soon as 500GB SSDs hit 100€, I'll get one.

You're welcome.
That's still a bit over 50€ to go but we're sure getting there.
