What is this case?

Welcome to SPCR!!

Don't know what the case is off hand but I don't think they are available retail - might be some kind of custom mass-produced case. Certainly looks like a VIA (C3) micro-ITX system to me.

Looks like some 40mm nastiness going on in there though...

If people here don't know, then the guys over at www.epiacenter.com almost certainly will, I would suspect.

So what do you think the motherboard is? I've looked at the Via's and I can't match it up to any of theirs

I don't recall the manufacture of the unit but one of my customers, back in the day as a tech, had one of these. I would say he cooked about 4 CPUs in the course of a year. The variety he was using used a standard desktop P3 800, notebook drive, single notebook dimm. really cool looking but no good when it came to being run alot.

I reckon that there's a pretty small fan in there - either 40mm or 60mm, which at full tilt is going to give out a nice level of high-pitch buzz.

You could probably undervolt or swap out but a cramped case like that is going to need decent airflow to keep it from cooking and that means more noise, as there is no room to mount larger fans by the looks of it.

I also reckon that the board is probably a VIA C3 M-Series although I wouldn't consider myself an expert.

The Morex case you refer to is a pretty nice one although again, you are in 60mm case fan territory but that's pretty much par for the course in a case that size, I think. You might want to look at Travla cases also but if you're already digging about on Epia Center and such sites, then you probably know more than I do about this already...

The board inside that thing is definately not a VIA C3 M-series. That thing is the size of a CD-case. CD-cases are approx. 12x14cm. The VIA C3 M-series is 17x17cm. Besides the connectors are in the wrong places.

The board inside is probably a Nano-ITX (12x12cm), or something along those lines, althought I didn't think they were released yet.

It's not a nano, it's not a Via either...its some odd proprietary form factor that they produce themselves. They've been selling them that size for several years.
