Where can you get fan grills and filters?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Where can you get fan grills and filters?

Post by Kevin Ar18 » Thu Nov 04, 2004 8:10 pm

I'm considering the possiblity of cutting some holes in the case for placing some fans. However, if I do that, I'll need a fan grill to cover the hole. In addition, I would like to place some kind of filter in front of the fan to catch dust.

So...
What are some reputable sites that I could get fan grills from?
I was thinking about the kind of grill as shown on the back of this PSU:
http://www.compucasecorp.com/power/hec-ar-t_1.htm
This would probably be the best for airflow and not causing noise, correct?

Also, what options do I have in terms of placing a filter over the intake. The fan will be on the inside of the case pulling air in, so I guess the filter would either (1) have to go either ouside the case or (2) just inside the case between the case and fan. What are some of the options that I have? I'd prefer something that could filter out the dust.

Eh, any grill will be impede airflow by as much as 20%.

But the best place get a fan grill is your local computer parts store. This is one of those cheap items where it'll cost twice as much to mail it to you and everyone is better served if you get it locally.

Dunno about filters.

Someone in another thread of mine gave me a link to another site.

I found some grills that seem to fit what I was looking for here:

They also had an interesting filter:

That particular filter wouldn't get the really small stuff (would it even catch dust?), but I'm wondering if it still might be useful. One downside, it it is round instead of square (less intake area), but on the plus side, it is removeable and washable. They do have some square models but I'm not sure if I like them:

I second the recommendation of getting the grills from a local shop. The last time I bought one it was a 120mm wire grill for $2.99 canadian - hardly worth shipping.

For filters, the best approach is a large filter area compared to the size of fan. I aim for at least 2x. This is harder if you are running intake fans (I don't). There are lots of material types to choose from. Nylon stockings work. I'm partial to a used dryer sheet taped over the opening, it seems to be a good balance between filtering and flow resistance.

The filters that fit directly over the fans are going to cause far more resistance.
