P150: does drive suspension increase disk temp?
I have a WD 2500 KS suspended in a P150. I have tri-cool fan set to low. XP90 with 92mm akasa quiet fan on CPU. No other fan. No other drive.
S.M.A.R.T. reports my drive temp at 50-61C !! I did a speedfan detailed analysis that shows my drive fitness = 97% and performance = 100%. Is the temp reading just wrong, or does drive suspension cause the reading to be wrong (maybe the band is right where the therm sensor is?), or does it cause the temp to be high, or do I just have bad airflow?

They do but not by a significant amount, maybe a couple degrees c, a tiny bit of airflow will make a much larger difference than hard-mounting the HDDs wich isnt even an option in the P150(silicone grommets or suspension).454Casull wrote:IIRC, without hard mounting, the heat-sinking effect is lost and the temps go up.
The Samsung P120 in my Sonata has never indicated more then 30C. It is isolated from the drive sled with m0002a's method and cooled with a 120mm Yate Loon fan at ~840 rpm in the standard Sonata intake location. The Seagate 7200.7 beneath shows 38C under the same conditions. I think the difference is sensor location and calibration. My Finger Probe says that neither one gets any hotter then warm, and the IR thermometer agrees.
I did find that the second slot down was coolest in the Sonata.

where your drive is mounted will make a difference, mount it in the middle if its not already, and move any cables out of the airflow path.
454Casull (AKA big gun). Hard mounting drives only makes a temp difference if you read the forums at THG or Anandtech, what will make a difference is a drive sleds like I have on my Sonata, they have no airflow underneath them and very little over the sides.
Suspension is something I am looking forward to when Antec bring out a P150 in Black.
