Antec P 150 -120mm front fan?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Antec P 150 -120mm front fan?

Post by DeltaForce » Tue Jan 23, 2007 10:52 am

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the P-150, but don't like that it has 2 front fans (2x90mm?). All things being equal, I'd rather have fewer and larger fans. My Acousticase had a single 120 front, with good airflow, but they stopped making cases. Does anyone know if (1) 120mm fan will fit in the p150 front intake? I could dremmel out the grill potentially, but am not sure of the space? I like the clean look of the P 150 and was wondering if this could work?

Thanks. Nothing is too quiet to me!

I've checked, and there appears to be sufficient room for a 120 fan. The front fan/s are mounted to a metal door, which with a 120, might just fowl the hdd tray handles slightly, as you swing the door shut. But the door has a hinge that allows complete removal of the door, which should give you sufficient flexibility to shut the door without fowling those hdd tray handles. So yep, no problems modding it with a 120.

Just a heads up. The P150 does not come with the two front fans. They are optional.

Hello,

You may not need any fans in the front, or if you do, a quiet 92mm should be plenty. If you do fill up the HD bays, then two 92mm may have better "coverage" than one 120mm does; according to some folks around here. The blade area of two 92mm is a smidge more than one 120mm, as well.

My concern over the 92mm fans are noise. I don't have a 92mm so I don't know the noise level, but would postulate a single 120mm delivers more air with less noise (by being able to turn slower). And (2) 92mm's seems like too many fans. I want my rig to be quieter than the Notre Dame cathedral so number of fans is a concern. In my current configuration, sometimes I disconnect the 120mm front, but sometimes I need it for gaming. Anyway, I appreciate the input and will get the P 150 and see what makes the most sense.

Thanks.

I'm having a system built using a P150 case.

Based on info I got from here, my builder is ordering three Scythe Kaze-Jyu SY1025 SL12L fans with 14 dBA and 28 CFM.

Two will go in the front and the third will be added to the Noctua NH-U9F CPU cooler.

Will two Kaze-Jyus fit in the front? They are 100mm fans, not 92mm. I know they have mounting holes to be compatible with 92mm, but I don't think you'll be able to put two right next to each other like that.

Yes it will require modding to accomadate two 100mm fans. There is just enough room, but only with new mounting holes drilled.

Interesting,

I've looked at the fans on the Scythe website and a good review photo of the P150 opened up , I was thinking there was just enough room, hole drilling is a twist.

If I remember correctly somebody did fit a 120 front fan. Of course the filter had to go, but it worked.

I have 2x 92mm Nexus RealSilents in front of my SOLO. They are very quiet and I have no complaints.

The specs on those Kaze fans look good but I wouldn't want to modify my case.

I'm in the process of building mine and that's what I have up front. I'm using some anti-vibration mounts as well.

I have 4 drives, and use two Nexus 92 mm up front at full speed. They are somewhat soft mounted with 5/32'' bungee cord and a silicone fan gasket.

I'm more concerned about cooling than quiet, but even if quiet was my principal concern, I'd be happy. The Nexus 92 mm fans are very quiet.

When I checked, it looked like the filter could stay in place.

I have a P150 with a passive ninja setup and a nexus 120 at the back. It's dead quiet like that. I recently added 2 92mm nexus fans at the front for extra hd-cooling. At 12V they are definately not quiet, so i used a Zalman ZM-MC1 which puts them @ 5V and makes them inaudible.

I too have 2x 92mm Nexus RealSilents in the front of my SOLO. I have them on a Zalman ZM-MC1. They start a 5 v. everytime. I did try the Nexus 120mm in the rear and it would not start at all at 5v.
I am going back to the Antec Tricool 120mm at least temporarily till I can find something else that will. The Tricool starts everytime at 5v.

Another Solo user here aho has 2x92mm from fans to keep 3 hard drives cool. I'm using NHB's from Dorothy, which are quieter than a pair of AcoustiFans I recently tried. Keep them turning slow and they don't add to the noise unless you really do have an almost silent case (eg passive everything else). Personally I'm much happier with the Solo than any other case I have (including SLK3000B with a front 120mm fan) since the area those 92mm fans blows over is better suited as an intake over hard drives.

My advice is to get the P150/Solo and some good 92mm fans and see for yourself - you might not need both, or even one depending on your setup. If it's not good enough then mod for a single 120mm can then be done. Silencing isn't cheap and I know I certainly have a lot of fans that weren't quiet enough...

I cut and installed a soft felt gasket between all of my fans and the frame. I made these out of felt pads with adhesive backs. Cost was less than $5. I also used plastic screws and nuts. I am pretty satisfied there is no vibration being transmitted to the frame.

Cheap and effective. Be careful of the thickness though, or you may not be able to close the front panel.

I also cut out the grilles for all my fans. Doesn't make a huge difference but for three minutes work with some snips, it was worth it. The front fans it makes no difference, frankly I don't know why they have grills anyway, but for the rear exhaust, you may want to get a wire guard if you have pets or small children with inquisitive fingers or tongues about. I don't.

I've got my P150 up and running now with E6600 C2D and BFG 7800GT OC and 1gig ram, with one WD 320sata HD.

I don't have any front fans, just the big one in the back (set to Medium) and the PSU. I've rarely seen the temp get above 40ºC

AcoustiFan Clears or DustProofs? And you mean NMB's, I presume.
