[Metal] Foam

Post by Chris Beard » Sun Apr 20, 2008 4:11 am

Hey all,

I know the SSD as standard era is almost upon us but it's not quite here yet. I wanted to build a hard drive enclosure that would be better than those available on the market without using any liquids. In my brief research I found out about metal foams.

Metal foams are not as conductive as their solid counterparts but are still pretty good heat exchangers. They can also be open-cell so can be used as fairly good sound absorbers.

Does anyone know where I can source small amounts of metal foam on the cheap in the UK? I found http://www.porvairadvancedmaterials.com/ but that's a little pricey.

Thanks,
Chris.

For a while I worked in a NiMH battery plant, and nickel-foam was involved. Although other than raiding their scrap bin, I don't know where you could get some. Maybe search for battery industry suppliers and see if you could score a few samples?
