Stupid Antec Solo front fan question

Post by rei » Sun Jul 27, 2008 12:24 pm

According to pictures, it has room for 2 92mm fans at the front--how are people using a 120mm fan there?

I'm building with a Solo and was wondering about the front fans. Where do they mount? I was also thinking of a 120mm fan.

Edit: I just happened on this conversation.

Oh, it's modified. I'm too lazy to do that. :)

Actually, just today I stuck a front 120mm fan in my Solo. I used foam weatherstripping to build a snug frame for it in the front fan cage, and just wedged it in. It's fairly sturdy and the little inner door still opens and closes just like normal. I'll try to get some pictures up in the next day or two, but I've been having problems with my hosting so I can't make promises.

I may friction fit a 120 in front on my Solo. I have an old 90mm fan laying around I can try to see if it reduces temperature. If it does, I can try a nexus or scythe low flow fan there to keep drive temperature down. The Slipstream might be good to flow a modest amount of air over the drive.

Are you all sure you need *any* fans there? What kind of drive temps are you getting?

It's really hard to say whether I need my front fan or not, since it's so hard to find information about safe hard drive temperatures. At any rate, my Velociraptor was running at around 42 C and I was uncomfortable with that, so I went with a front fan. My drive temperature dropped 10 degrees and my front fan is totally inaudible over my Seasonic S12-II.

Most people probably don't need a front fan in their Solo, but my computer's going to spend the next few months in a room with no air conditioning. Since ambient temps will probably hit 90 F on occasion, I'm only too happy to use overkill cooling.
