Hi all!
This is my first post to the forum, so please let me know if there is additional info that you might require to help me out.

I own a Supermicro SC743TQ-645 case and I am looking to replace the stock
(hotswap) fans with quieter fans. I do not need the hotswap capability but
the new fans need to fit into the original mounts.
Specs according to the supermicro site are:

FAN-0074L4 4x 80x38mm 4-pin PWM (middle) Fan w/ HUS FOR SC743

FAN-0082L4 2x 80x38mm 4-pin PWM fan assembly for SC743, 745

Anyone have a recomendation?

Hi,

Have no suggestions on fan models for you, but if you have a server board that supports ipmi, there may be other ways to control the fan speed. What board do you have installed?

its a "Superworkstation 7045A-3".
So the MB is a x7da3. OS is Opensuse 10.2/Xen.

Not sure how to enable ipmi...

Ahh... Found a way to enable the "fancontrol" tool under linux 2.6.18 on this board.
Now for the temps... What would you regard as a maximum "case temp"?
The "alarm temp" given with the lm-sensors reading is 50°. Not sure how to factor in (or better leave out) the cpus in that regard.
(I do not have to worry about the cpu tmeps as the cpus are watercooled.)

I have a different supermicro case (SC-742B) and if the hotswap fans are of the same model, all you need is a 92mm fan and a little work with the mounting wires to swap out what you have with a silent version.

however i found the fans on my own case way down the list in noisemakers.
if you still have the default power supply in the case, chances are pretty high that is your main source of noise.
