Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

P182 - definitely not silent - updated

Post by RyanW2050 » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:18 pm

I just blew some cash on a p182 and, while the craftsmanship is great and the looks are elegant.. it's not as quiet as i had hoped.

Here's my components:
8800gt superclocked - Accelero S1rev2 (passive)
Intel E6750 - AC Freezer 7 Pro (fan barely spins - silent)
PCP&C 610w - Replaced fan with this fan damn near silent

I used to have it all stuck in this abomination of a case. Yes that is a 25cm side panel fan. I had hooked up the front intake and side fan to a controller and turned them all to low. I also knocked the HDD bay out with a crow bar and suspended my drives from small bungee cords. It was pretty fuckin quiet.

Should I start shopping around for some slower case fans and hang my hard drives again?

Well, the stock fans on the Antec are definitely not silent... Switch them out (e.g., for Nexus fans), and take out the bottom fan. Instead, put in an intake fan. Undervolt them all. If you want to suspend your HDD's, take out the top hard-drive cage (no need for a crowbar this time :P ), or just do it in the top 5.25" cage.

A good place to start is to first, identify your sources of noise. Then you can easily replace the offenders.

Read the TIPS & HINTS FOR ASSEMBLY at the bottom of this page. (It's specified for early P180, but applies to P182 as well.)

Cheers

You don't mention your hard drives in your components list, how many do you have? What brand/models?

Replacing the antec tricool fans is almost mandatory. I know it doesn't make sense to buy the case regarded as one of the quietest of all time and then having to go spend extra money on fans.. antec should sell a cheaper version of the P182 without fans.

Here's something you can do in the meantime: set the tricool speed switches to 'High' and hardwired the molex connectors to 5v. The 'Low' setting of the tricools is 7v, so going from 7v to 5v makes a world of difference and should make it more tolerable while you wait for the replacement fans to arrive.

I just did this a few days ago and it definitely makes a difference.

Agreed, the TriCool is just about one of the worst fans on the market. Lousy, too expensive and moves basicly no air compared to the noise it produces!

With some wiring up they serve well as a 3 speed desk fan in the summer :P

Well, after swapping out the fans with 3x 800rpm Scythe Slip Stream and undervolting them all with a fan speed controller it's much nicer.

All that was left was the hard drive grinding which i fixed by suspending them with this method.

Nice and silent. Thanks guys.

How about the temps? Is it running hot now with less cooling?
